Pecos River Cleanup
April 22, 2023 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Contact Leader(s): Dan Potter, d.potter@nmvfo.org with any questions.
RESULTS: NMVFO’s 10-person crew spent a total of 25 person-hours cleaning an estimated half-mile of Pecos River frontage, centered on the Upper Dalton Fishing Area and the Rainy Day Picnic/Fishing Area. Many bags of trash were collected and turned over to USFS staff.
Our work was part of a larger project, the Dia del Rio y Camino, a large cleanup event running along the Pecos River from Pecos, NM to Pecos, TX.
Description: NMVFO is teaming up with The Upper Pecos Watershed Association on Earth Day, removing litter along the beautiful Pecos River north of Pecos, NM. The cleanup project is part of a larger one-day effort to beautify the river from Pecos, NM all the way to Pecos, TX, the Dia del Rio y Camino. Our part of the day’s work will take place on USFS land in the scenic Pecos Canyon. Litter pickers, visibility vests and trash bags will be provided, and the USFS will remove collected trash at the end of the day.
Volunteers should dress in layers, including long sleeved shirts and long pants, sun and rain protection, eye protection/sunglasses, work gloves, sturdy boots, a day pack, lunch and/or snacks, and water.
Later in the day the UPWA will celebrate Outstanding National Resource Waters designation of that stretch of Pecos river 1:00pm-3:00pm, gathering at the Dove Center to dance, eat and celebrate together in community, and volunteers are invited (RSVP).
Location: We will meet at 10AM at the Dove Center, Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey, 16 Guadalupe Lane, Pecos, NM (Google Map). Our workday will end at noon. The abbey is located about 1.5 miles north of Pecos on NM-63.
