CALLING ALL BACKPACKERS AND HIKERS! BECOME A TRAIL SCOUT!

Yet another way to volunteer with NMVFO, especially if you are a frequent hiker and backpacker, is to “scout” public land trails and report on the conditions you see. Trail scouting is something you can do on your own time and your own schedule, yet fills an important need to get current information on our trails. To learn more about what things to look for and how to submit your information to NMVFO, we have published a helpful guide: TRAIL SCOUTING FOR VOLUNTEERS.

Depending on the trail and the hikers, scouting projects might be one-day “out and back” day hikes, or they might entail longer backpacking trips for two or more days. Either way, there is a real need for current information on most of our public trails.

If the above sounds like fun, NMVFO strongly recommends that scouts use the buddy system, both to enhance your safety out on the trail, and because sharing a backcountry trail with friends is just more enjoyable.
