Osha Trail 1 (Mountainair RD)

RESULTS: Fifteen volunteers removed downfall along the upper, rerouted section of the Osha Trail to the point that had been cleared by NMVFO from the bottom up during the previous two years. In addition, all downed trees were removed from the Manzano Crest Trail between Capilla Peak and Osha Peak and trimming was done along this section of the Crest Trail. High winds and cold temperatures were no match for this strong team that was supported by NMVFO cooks with two breakfasts and one dinner. The work will continue in September with the building of new tread to fully rehabilitate the Osha Trail.
Description: Come join us for a weekend in the Manzanos! The work will consist of walking 1.5 miles south on the Manzano Crest Trail from Capilla Peak to reclaim Osha Trail, which was destroyed by the Trigo Fire. We will be clearing downed trees and lopping. Tools will be provided.
We will camp at Capilla Peak Campground, a primitive campground on the crest of the Manzano Mountains at an elevation of 9,300 ft. The campground has pit toilets but no water. The road to Capilla Peak is 10 miles long and starts in the Village of Manzano. It is a fairly rough forest road that is safe for a high clearance passenger car but probably not for a trailer. Camping is available for Friday and Saturday nights but volunteers are welcome to arrive on Saturday morning for the 8:30 start (please arrive a little early). The drive from Albuquerque is a little under 2 hours.
NMVFO will provide breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. Please bring your own dinnerware, your own food and water for Friday night, and lunch for the trail on Saturday and Sunday. Please consider bringing some extra water for the campsite. Volunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals), long pants, eye protection and work gloves. Long sleeve shirts and long pants are required. Hard hats will be provided. Bring sun protection and apparel appropriate for the predicted weather.
