Rio en Medio Watershed Restoration (Santa Fe NF)

May 6, 2022 @ 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Contact Leader(s): Jenny Blackmore, j.blackmore@nmvfo.org with any questions.

RESULTS: On Friday May 6, 14 NMVFO volunteers joined Steve Vrooman and Keystone Restoration Ecology for some post-fire watershed restoration work along the Rio en Medio after the Medio Fire damaged the area in August 2020. Work included piling brush to keep cows away from fens and other sensitive areas, and building rock structures to create shallow ponds for fish. Volunteers built an estimated 35 structures and laid brush in 15 locations.

Description: NMVFO will partner with Rio Puerco Alliance and Keystone Restoration Ecology to help restore a wetland area in the southeast corner of the Valle Grande, the largest valley in Valles Caldera National Preserve. This is part of a larger a New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED) wetlands project, the East Fork Headwaters Restoration Project, which will restore 400 acres of the headwaters of the East Fork of the Jemez River. Our job will be to put the finishing touches on the project by building rock dams along a spring-fed channel and a small intermittent creek. The site is close to a road and can be accessed with a short hike.
