South Crest Trail #130

SUMMARY: 6.5k feet to 10.6k feet, 13.6 miles

DESCRIPTION: This trail, located between the Canyon Estates trailhead and the Upper Tram Terminal, is the southern portion of the Crest Trail (which is 26 miles long). It is possible to create loop hikes using one of the trails connecting with the Faulty Trail to the east. A strenuous hike in the beginning is rewarded with stunning views along the crest. A short side trip will take you to the top of South Sandia Peak.

GETTING THERE: Travel east on I-40 to the south Tijeras exit. After exiting, turn left to go under the highway, then right towards Canyon Estates. Follow the residential road to the (small, busy) parking lot at the end.

CONDITIONS: Scrub oak grows along the path, and will tend to grow into the trail unless recently cleared. Sometimes blowdowns in aspen groves need clearing. The top is really high, and often hikers do not take into account the cold and wind at the top.
