New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors (NMVFO)
Announces Women’s Trail Day Workshop
Outdoorswomen of All Ages and Experience Levels Welcome

Albuquerque, NM, April 15 2023. Enjoy the camaraderie of other women as NMVFO reviews some trail work basics, providing instruction on trail-building tools, techniques, and tips for making user-friendly and sustainable trails. Both experienced and completely new volunteers are welcome on this introductory trail-building project!

Course instructor Julia Plews encouraged women to try out the workshop, especially if they’ve not done any trailwork before. “There will be lots of opportunities for questions, feedback, and networking with fellow women passionate about New Mexico’s hiking trails. For beginners, it’s a good way to get started, and for those with more experience, it’s a great way to get a quick refresher.”

For more information and to register for the workshop, please visit NMVFO’s project page here: https://nmvfo.org/projects/womens-trail-day-abq-open-space/

Raton NM.  Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sunday will be a half day of work.

Part of the 8,000 square mile Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, Capulin Volcano showcases the volcanic geology of northeastern New Mexico. The views are spectacular day or night, with views of 4 different states from the volcanic rim, as well as one of the darkest, star-studded night skies in the country.

NMVFO’s Project Leader Christy Osmon stated “This is our first partnership with Capulin Volcano National Monument, and we’re looking forward to working with NPS to both clear the trails and to star-gaze in the evenings!”  Volunteers can learn more and register for the project at NMVFO’s projects page here:  https://nmvfo.org/projects/capulin-volcano-nps/
