Valles Caldera National Preserve
May 6, 2017 @ 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Contact Leader(s): Jon Blakey, 734-255-5251, jblakey102@gmail.com with any questions.
Join us at the Valles Caldera National Preserve located 78 miles northwest of Albuquerque, where we will be participating in an initial one day trail repair project. We will be removing dead-fall trees and limbs on a northernmost trail of the Caldera that has seen few if any hikers since the Las Conchas fire in 2011. That means we will drive several miles back into a remote area using four-wheel drive vehicles, hike and/or ATV up to three miles on the identified trail, assist certified crosscut saw and chainsaw folks with the removal of on fallen trees/limbs, and repair trail paths using pick mattocks, McLeods, Pulaskis, handsaws, loppers, and possibly rock bars. If we have too many volunteers (not likely), preferences will be given to volunteers with crosscut saw certification and/or high clearance 4wd vehicles due to the nature of this project. Be prepared for a good workout.
