Trail Workshop Field Training Project

March 16, 2019 @ 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Contact Leader(s): Chris Fritzsche, 505-504-3768, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com; Larry Benson, L.Benson@nmvfo.org with any questions.

RESULTS: This project followed up on the NMVFO’s annual Introduction to Trail Construction and Maintenance class at the Albuquerque REI Store on March 14. To provide interested attendees with field training, 18 volunteers joined 5 Albuquerque Open Space personnel under the supervision of Jim Sattler to build approximately 650 feet of new trail with some rock structures and close off more than 800 feet of old trail with erosion control and initial re-vegetation.

This trail work project with Albuquerque Open Space Division follows up on an introductory classroom session held at the Albuquerque REI Store on March 14; however, additional volunteers are also invited to attend. Experienced Open Space and NMVFO trail workers will help mentor new volunteers in how to maintain, restore, re-route, and close parts of two trails in the Foothills Open Space. Photos of last year’s work are available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157667063582258.

Participants should wear sturdy boots (no soft shoes!), work gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with snacks, water, and personal items. We’ll meet at 8:00 am at the Copper Ave Trailhead. (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.0791608,-106.4852808,18.17z?hl=en ) Starbucks coffee, juice, fruit, and snacks will be available to those who arrive early enough. Depending on attendance, we’ll probably finish work by mid-afternoon, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if needed. To sign up for this project, contact Lawrence (Larry) Benson at LawRBenson@aol.com.
