Description: After having to cancel a project on the other end of the St Peters Dome Trail (#118) in March because of flooding along Forest Road 289, we will be working in from its northern trailhead. For some photos of our last project there in 2013, go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157633694712112/with/8832524304/ The trail continues to suffer erosion and deadfall as a result of the Las Conchas Fire of 2011. This project will be supervised by Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District, one of the U.S. Forest Service’s acknowledged trail experts. Our work will include restoring the trail’s tread by clearing grass and other vegetation from the trail corridor, removing rocks and building cairns and check dams where needed, removing any tree trunks blocking the trail, and improving drainage by cleaning sediment from old water bars, making rolling dips where appropriate, and out-sloping the tread along hillsides. Although there will be little or no shade, the scenic views will be unobstructed. If lucky we may even see some of the Bighorn Sheep recently reintroduced in nearby Cochiti Canyon. USFS regulations require long pants, long-sleeved shirts, boots (no soft shoes or sandals), and work gloves. Please also bring a day pack with plenty of water, some of your favorite snacks, a rain jacket or poncho if rain is in the forecast, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If there are more than 20 volunteers, others may be placed on a waiting list. Camping will be available on Friday and Saturday nights in a grassy meadow known as “Graduation Flats,” where there is lots of space for tents and a parking lot for vehicles and RVs. The Jemez Ranger District will provide a porta-potty, water, and possibly some wood for a campfire. The VFO will provide dinner on Saturday evening and breakfasts, Saturday and Sunday morning, and sandwich fixings and fruit for lunch. Volunteers camping overnight should sign up with Larry by 9 PM on May 8, while those just coming on Saturday should notify him by noon on May 10.
Directions: Take NM 4 to its junction with Forest Road 289 (between mile markers 43 and 44) and follow the green VFO signs 2.3 miles south to the parking lot (just past its junction with FR 287 and before the junction with FR 36. See https://www.google.com/maps/@35.8235444,-106.4470005,863m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en The drive from Albuquerque’s northern boundary on I-25, US 550, and NM 4 is 77 miles and takes about 2 hours. (Caution: NM 4 has limited passing zones and strictly enforced speed limits in San Ysidro, the Jemez Pueblo, and Jemez Springs.)
The drive from Santa Fe’s city limit via NM 4 through White Rock is 53 miles and takes about 1 1/4 hours. It will be appreciated if anyone having a high-clearance vehicle would help in carpooling the 7 miles to the trailhead if necessary. For those not camping on Friday night, please plan to arrive by 8:45 AM on Saturday.
