CANCELED DUE TO FOREST CLOSURE – Ellis Trail (Sandia RD)

June 11, 2022 @ 8:00 AM - June 12, 2022 @ 3:00 PM

Contact Leader(s): Jenny Blackmore, j.blackmore@nmvfo.org with any questions.

Description: Come join us on the Ellis Trail, not far from the Sandia Crest in the Sandia Mountains. The Sandia Ranger District (SRD) has identified several sections of trail which are eroded and in need of realignment for better sustainability. Volunteers will build new tread and close off the old trail, and there will likely be some rock work (cribbing) involved for those who want. NMVFO will provide hard hats (required on USFS projects) and tools. Also required: work gloves, boots, long pants, long sleeves, eye protection (sunglasses). Please bring a day pack for food, water, sunblock and rain gear.

This is a car-camping project, a rare opportunity to spend a night on the mountain. The SRD is currently contemplating where we’ll camp (stay tuned). It will probably be close to the Ellis Trailhead, though on the north side of the road. NMVFO will supply water; it will be helpful if volunteers can also bring some containers. Along with camping gear (tent, sleeping bag & pad, headlamp, camp chair, etc), volunteers are also asked to bring their own plate, bowl, mug and silverware. Feel free to bring a cooler and beverages – adult or other. NMVFO will provide breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday; volunteers will supply their own lunches and snacks.

Volunteers are welcome to camp Friday night (no meals provided), join us early for breakfast on Saturday, or join us at our 8:00 AM meeting time. We’ll plan to work until ~4:00 on Saturday, and we’ll finish before 2:00 on Sunday.

As a reminder, pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects.

Please sign up below by Sunday, June 5. One person per signup. Hope you can join us!
