Dalton Creek Restoration Project (Pecos RD)

October 27, 2021 @ 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Contact Leader(s): Mike Timmer, 281-622-6858, m.timmer@nmvfo.org with any questions.

RESULTS: Eleven NMVFO volunteers cut over 300 willow sticks and planted them in 60 auger holes to help restore a wetlands area along Dalton Creek, a tributary to the Pecos River. The wetlands had been damaged by a recent large flood. The volunteers also planted and raked in native grass seed on over 16,000 square feet of disturbed areas, a two-track that was being closed, and a former camping area.

Description: Join NMVFO for a wetland restoration project along Dalton Creek, a tributary of the Pecos River. We’ll be planting native willows, grasses, and other plants around a reconstructed beaver pond. The wetland and former beaver ponds were damaged by a large flood several years ago and are being restored by the Upper Pecos Watershed Association.

We will meet on October 27th at 9:00 am at the parking lot at the intersection of Forest Roads (FR) 123 and 123A. The turnoff onto FR 123 is about 5.5 miles north of the town of Pecos on Highway 63. The parking lot is about 1.5 miles up FR123. From the parking lot we will carpool to the beaver pond.

Please bring a day pack with lunch, snacks, rain gear, and plenty of water. The Forest Service requires that workers wear work gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sturdy boots. NMVFO will provide the tools and hard hats (if needed).

Current Covid-19 protocols will be in effect; details will be provided prior to the start of the project.

Please note that pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects.

Group Size: 25
