New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors and Gila Chapter Back Country Horsemen Announce Three New Trail Projects On the Gila National Forest

Backpackers and Horsemen To Focus on Local Trails

Silver City NM, January 13, 2023.  Two of New Mexico’s premier volunteer groups will be focused on improving trails in the Gila Region this Spring. Three separate projects from March through May are planned, focusing on trail maintenance, clearing obstructions, and trail marking. All interested trail users are welcome to sign up, and no trail-work experience is necessary. Volunteers will receive hands-on training, and all tools will be provided.

The work will center on a series of trails that are heavily used by multiple types of trail users and will have widespread benefits. Project Leader Melissa Green noted “These projects will include some homemade meals, so volunteers won’t have to do their own cooking, and the views will be amazing. While fire has affected these areas some, the trails we will be working are mostly unburned and pristine–and the creeks still have good water and good stands of mixed conifer.”

The three projects will be located along the Little Whitewater Trail (March 16), the Allie/Bear Canyon/Woodhaul Loop (March 30), and the Lillie Mountain Trail, located in the Jerky Mountains (May 1). Interested volunteers can visit NMVFO’s website to learn more and register for the projects here: https://nmvfo.org/projects-and-events-list/
