
SUMMARY: 8.9k feet to 11.9k feet, 2.6 miles
DESCRIPTION: Several parallel trails go from Hwy 150 (to Taos Ski Valley) to Lobo Peak Trail #57. This trail follows Gavilan Canyon up the mountainside, with a small stream, and after a steep climb emerges into meadow.
“Gavilán” is Spanish for sparrowhawk (but also ingrown toenail, which might be appropriate in this case.)
This is not to be confused with the short Gavilan Trail near Capilla Peak in the Manzano Mountains.
GETTING THERE: On Hwy 150 into Taos Ski Valley, look for parking just outside village limits near Austing Haus.
CONDITIONS: In 2019 the lower trail was mostly cleared of downfalls, but remains steep.
