SUMMARY:CANCELED DUE TO FOREST CLOSURE - Ellis Trail (Sandia RD)
DESCRIPTION:Description: Come join us on the Ellis Trail\, not far from the Sandia Crest in the Sandia Mountains. The Sandia Ranger District (SRD) has identified several sections of trail which are eroded and in need of realignment for better sustainability. Volunteers will build new tread and close off the old trail\, and there will likely be some rock work (cribbing) involved for those who want. NMVFO will provide hard hats (required on USFS projects) and tools. Also required: work gloves\, boots\, long pants\, long sleeves\, eye protection (sunglasses). Please bring a day pack for food\, water\, sunblock and rain gear. \nThis is a car-camping project\, a rare opportunity to spend a night on the mountain. The SRD is currently contemplating where we’ll camp (stay tuned). It will probably be close to the Ellis Trailhead\, though on the north side of the road. NMVFO will supply water; it will be helpful if volunteers can also bring some containers. Along with camping gear (tent\, sleeping bag & pad\, headlamp\, camp chair\, etc)\, volunteers are also asked to bring their own plate\, bowl\, mug and silverware. Feel free to bring a cooler and beverages – adult or other. NMVFO will provide breakfast and dinner on Saturday\, and breakfast on Sunday; volunteers will supply their own lunches and snacks. \nVolunteers are welcome to camp Friday night (no meals provided)\, join us early for breakfast on Saturday\, or join us at our 8:00 AM meeting time. We’ll plan to work until ~4:00 on Saturday\, and we’ll finish before 2:00 on Sunday. \nAs a reminder\, pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects. \nPlease sign up below by Sunday\, June 5. One person per signup. Hope you can join us! \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: Max 20 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign Up

SUMMARY:Ute Lake SP Bridge Replacement (EMNRD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: On June 18\, 8 NMVFO volunteers spent two days volunteering at Ute Lake State Park. They were able to dismantle an old degrading trail bridge and build a new one in its place. They were also able to repair a second trail bridge. Some sections of the trail were being eroded from water runoff so the volunteers installed 14 water drainage diversions and filled in the eroded sections. \n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Join NMVFO on a car-camping project to demolish an old trail bridge and build a new bridge in its place and improve the drainage from a short hiking trail at Ute Lake State Park in northeastern New Mexico. SUMMARY:Abo Painting Project (Salinas Pueblo Missions NM)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Seven NMVFO volunteers joined National Park Service staff to refurbish information signs at the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument\, Abo site. The VFO work crew masked\, sanded\, washed\, and spray painted the metal frames for 15 signs located throughout the monument. The NPS staff provided all painting supplies and significant support. New information signs will be installed in the refurbished frames. Three volunteers\, who had not previously participated in a Salinas project\, were presented with Salinas Monument Challenge Coins. Weather was pleasant with some wind that made spray painting a challenge. A resident diamond-back was spotted during the site survey (see picture); fortunately\, no diamond-backs disturbed the actual painting project.\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK
