SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:For a printable project description\, click here. \nCome help build a permanent naturalistic drinker for thirsty wildlife in the hilly eastern part of the vast Sevillita Wildlife Refuge. In addition to wetlands along the Rio Grande\, the Refuge’s 230\,000 acres include four different biomes—Chihuahuan desert\, Great Plains short grassland prairie\, pinon juniper woodland\, and Colorado Plateau shrub steppe—providing habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. The animals needing this new drinker range from bears (who have damaged artificial drinkers) to bats (who can drink only while flying over an area of open water). To construct the new drinker\, we’ll line a shallow 12 by 18-foot depression with landscaping fabric and cover the surface with rocks embedded in concrete. The large surface and gently slopped edges of this virtual pond will accommodate numerous reptiles\, birds\, and mammals. \nPreparations: Volunteers should wear long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sturdy boots or work shoes (not soft shoes)\, work gloves\, hat\, sunglasses\, and bring a day pack with sunscreen\, plenty of water\, snacks\, and lunch. It’s likely to be hot and sunny\, but if rain is in the forecast\, pack a poncho or waterproof jacket. No toilet facilities will be available\, so you may also want to bring sanitizer and tissue. Additional guidance is available at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. Register for the project by sending an email to the project leaders as soon as possible but no later than May 3. Please indicate if you’d like to offer or obtain a ride\, and they will try to coordinate ride sharing. \nDirections: We will meet at the far northeastern corner of the refuge. As shown in the accompanying map\, take I-25 south from Albuquerque about 50 miles to US Highway 60 (Exit 169) and drive east approximately 16 miles (where the road curves south into the Los Pinos Mountains). Look on your left for a faded blue elephant statue in front of the closed Blue Springs Cafe. In about 100 more yards\, turn right onto a dirt road (where a green NMVFO sign should be visible) and park just past the gate. (To locate on Google Maps\, enter 34°25’16.6″N 106°31’03.6″W.) Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM. We’ll then carpool in high clearance vehicles to the work site\, about 6 miles to the south.

SUMMARY:Datil Well Campground
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend in the Historic Datil Mountains and visit the Very Large Array. Datil Well was one of 15 former water wells spaced every ten miles along the historic Magdalena Livestock Driveway that once stretched 120 miles from Springerville\, AZ to Magdalena\, NM. We will camp Friday and Saturday nights at the Group Shelter site which has fresh well water\, vault toilets\, shady tent sites and plenty of room for parking to include RVs. There is a motel in nearby Datil for those who do not wish to camp. \nEnjoy beautiful overlooks of the San Augustin Plains from the trails from as we take on three sections of the Datil Well Loop—the sections (all within the same general area) have been prioritized to facilitate completion of some or all depending upon group size\, weather\, or other difficulties. Priority #1 is ~800 foot reroute of a badly eroded fall line section. Priority #2 will be fixing drainage along the east section leading up to the choke point just prior to the reroute.  There really is no way of re-routing this section\, so I figured the best option is to just do a better job at managing the drainage. Priority #3 is another ~500 foot re-route just above the other reroute section.  The existing section is a little steep and heavily rutted.  The re-route section follows the contour better and has more shade. The hike to the furthest point of the work area from the campground is slightly more than a half mile (0.6 miles). \nNMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night. Bring water bottles/packs\, daypack\, lunches and snacks\, and a camp chair is a good idea long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, work gloves\, work boots\, sun protection\, raingear (just in case)\,. Carpooling is encouraged. Please sign up for this project by Tuesday\, April 26th so that our meal coordinator (Micky Hogue) can match provisions to participants.  Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nDatil is 61 miles west of Socorro on US Hwy 60. The campground is ¼ mile south of Datil on Hwy 12. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area. In partnership with REI and the Albuquerque Open Space Division\, the New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors is conducting a 2-part introduction to trail construction and maintenance on March 17 and 19. \nOn Thursday March 17 at 6:00 pm\, an indoor workshop will be offered at the REI Store\, 1550 Mercantile NE. Two experienced NMVFO project leaders will discuss the fundamentals of trail work with an illustrated presentation featuring recent projects on public lands throughout New Mexico and a display of various tools used. Two U.S. Forest Service videos will also show how volunteers refurbish and improve trails. The presenters will answer questions and provide a list of NMVFO projects scheduled in 2016. DESCRIPTION:Skill level: 2 Pulaski \n\n\nContact Larry Benson\, 505-821-7999\, LawRBenson@aol.com to sign up\n  \n\nVia Posada Open Space    \nSaturday\, 8/22/2015\, 8:00 AM \nContact Larry Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com\, 505-821-7999 \n  \nThis is a previously unscheduled project to assist Boy Scouts of Troop 6 in making a new hiking trail in Albuquerque’s Via Posada Open Space\, located on the west side of the Four Hills Community.  As part of this project\, one of the scouts\, Michael Liles\, will be demonstrating planning and leadership skills to help qualify as an Eagle Scout.  Jim Sattler and some of his staff from the city’s Open Space Division\, will provide technical support\, safety oversight\, and quality control.  Our tasks will include clearing grass\, relocating other vegetation\, and installing rocks where needed to create a sustainable new trail while blocking off the old trail segment with replanted vegetation and other erosion control measures.  This work will follow up on a project the NMVFO did in the same location last August.  Troop 6 will provide snacks and drinks in the morning and some pizza for lunch.   Because of the time of year\, pay attention to the latest weather forecast and dress accordingly.  Wear sturdy boots\, work gloves\, hats\, and a day pack with water and extra snacks if desired.  Please contact Larry Benson no later than February 4 to sign up for this project. \n  \nDirections:  From I-40 Exit 167 at the east end of Central Blvd. (by its intersection with Tramway Blvd)\, go south on Four Hills Road down through the Tijeras Arroyo about 7/10 of a mile to Stagecoach Rd.  Veer right (west) on Stagecoach Rd about 4/10 of a mile to a 3-way stop.  Turn right on Via Posada and go down a short hill to Navarra Way.  The entrance to the Open Space is on the left just a short distance past this intersection at 724 Via Posada SE.  Park along the curb on Via Posada or Navarra Way (being careful not to block any driveways).  Please plan to arrive by 8:00 AM.

DESCRIPTION:Via Posada Open Space \nSaturday\, 2/07/2015\, 8:00 AM \nContact Larry Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com\, 505-821-7999 \n  \nThis is a previously unscheduled project to assist Boy Scouts of Troop 6 in making a new hiking trail in Albuquerque’s Via Posada Open Space\, located on the west side of the Four Hills Community.  As part of this project\, one of the scouts\, Michael Liles\, will be demonstrating planning and leadership skills to help qualify as an Eagle Scout.  Jim Sattler and some of his staff from the city’s Open Space Division\, will provide technical support\, safety oversight\, and quality control.  Our tasks will include clearing grass\, relocating other vegetation\, and installing rocks where needed to create a sustainable new trail while blocking off the old trail segment with replanted vegetation and other erosion control measures.  This work will follow up on a project the NMVFO did in the same location last August.  Troop 6 will provide snacks and drinks in the morning and some pizza for lunch.   Because of the time of year\, pay attention to the latest weather forecast and dress accordingly.  Wear sturdy boots\, work gloves\, hats\, and a day pack with water and extra snacks if desired.  Please contact Larry Benson no later than February 4 to sign up for this project. \n  \nDirections:  From I-40 Exit 167 at the east end of Central Blvd. (by its intersection with Tramway Blvd)\, go south on Four Hills Road down through the Tijeras Arroyo about 7/10 of a mile to Stagecoach Rd.  Veer right (west) on Stagecoach Rd about 4/10 of a mile to a 3-way stop.  Turn right on Via Posada and go down a short hill to Navarra Way.  The entrance to the Open Space is on the left just a short distance past this intersection at 724 Via Posada SE.  Park along the curb on Via Posada or Navarra Way (being careful not to block any driveways).  Please plan to arrive by 8:00 AM.
