SUMMARY:Golden Open Space
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Open Space\, acquired in 1964\, consists of 1\,180 acres of rugged terrain and is among some of the first properties set aside by the City of Albuquerque for the preservation of nature. Breathtaking views of mesas\, colorful arroyos and several mountain ranges make this remote and seldom-visited property a great escape from the city. We will be building new trail as part of the City of Albuquerque’s trail system at the Golden Open Space\, which is located just north of the San Pedro Creek Estates\, off NM 14. Whether approaching from Albuquerque or Santa Fe\, come by NM 14 (aka HWY 337); near the Bernalillo/Sandoval county line\, turn on to Via Entrada through San Pedro Creek Estates. Access granted only for the project through private property; detailed directions will be provided to volunteers later. \nWe intend to rendezvous with Jim Sattler\, Assistant Open Space Superintendent\, no later than 8:30 AM on Saturday\, May and begin work shortly thereafter. Volunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (absolutely no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes)\, work gloves; helmets and eye protection are highly recommended. Also\, bring sun and rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water snacks and a lunch. Registration for this project is required for planning purposes; please sign up through the project leader (info below) no later than 12:00 PM on Thursday\, May 18th. \nGeolocation: Golden Open Space Trail\, Sandia Park\, NM 87047\, USA \nLatitude: 35.26867762676451 \nLongitude: -106.3178300857544 \nLinks for more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768.

SUMMARY:Valles Caldera National Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Valles Caldera National Preserve located 78 miles northwest of Albuquerque\, where we will be participating in an initial one day trail repair project. We will be removing dead-fall trees and limbs on a northernmost trail of the Caldera that has seen few if any hikers since the Las Conchas fire in 2011. That means we will drive several miles back into a remote area using four-wheel drive vehicles\, hike and/or ATV up to three miles on the identified trail\, assist certified crosscut saw and chainsaw folks with the removal of on fallen trees/limbs\, and repair trail paths using pick mattocks\, McLeods\, Pulaskis\, handsaws\, loppers\, and possibly rock bars. If we have too many volunteers (not likely)\, preferences will be given to volunteers with crosscut saw certification and/or high clearance 4wd vehicles due to the nature of this project. Be prepared for a good workout.

SUMMARY:Airstrip Mesa Trail
DESCRIPTION:Interested in lending a hand in a remote and seldom visited part of western New Mexico? If so\, join us at Airstrip Mesa near Luna\, New Mexico in the Apache National Forest which is administered by the Gila. What we’ll be doing is reopening an old trail that will provide a loop with the Trout Creek Trail. Our job will be to reconstruct tread and do some heavy duty brushing of the trail. We’ll work all day Friday and Saturday and half a day on Sunday. \nThis will be a car camp near our work site. We will not be in an organized campground; instead\, we’ll be in an out of the way area that offers a lot of solitude. The VFO will be supplying breakfast on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday plus dinner on Friday and Saturday. Each of us will be responsible for our own lunches\, snacks and beverages\, adult or otherwise. Most folks will arrive Thursday afternoon and work the 2 ½ days. If\, however\, your schedule doesn’t permit\, you can join us anytime on Friday or even Saturday morning. \nWe will be at about 7\,000 feet so we can expect just about any kind of weather in late April. For those unfamiliar with the VFO\, check out our Web page at nmvfo.org. It will supply you with information about the organization\, and\, most helpful\, provide a link to Frequently Asked Question. \nFor other questions you might have about the VFO and this projectt or\, best of all\, would like to sign up for Airstrip Mesa\, please contact Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com or call 505-385-0517. \nHope to hear from you and see you on the trail.

SUMMARY:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (VODNWR)\, the Southwest’s first urban refuge will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people on 570 acres of a former dairy farm just five miles south of downtown Albuquerque on the Rio Grande. The refuge has little infrastructure and the beginnings of a trail system for us to maintain\, therefore we’re a big part of whatever it will become! This year we’ll be expanding and improving what exists while laying the foundation for the future. \nThere has been a change in scope: this year we’ll be assisting the refuge with native species restoration by planting several hundred Cottonwood saplings in the bosque area along the Rio Grande (click here for proposed planting area). We won’t be the only volunteer group in attendance; we’ll be accompanied by 30-40 volunteers from the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation\, 40 or so volunteers from Wild Earth Guardians\, a troop of Boy Scouts and I would expect a few folks from the Friends of Valle De Oro. \nWe intend to rendezvous with Jennifer Owen-White\, the Refuge Manager\, around 8:30 AM on Saturday\, April 1st and begin work around 9:00 AM; we anticipate ending around 2:00 PM. Volunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (absolutely no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes)\, work gloves; helmets and eye protection are highly recommended. Also\, bring sun and rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water and snacks. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (http://friendsofvalledeoro.wildapricot.org/). Registration for this project is required for planning purposes; please sign up through the project leader (info below) no later than 12:00 PM on Wednesday\, March 29th. \nI-25 exit for Rio Bravo\, proceed west to 2nd Street\, then left (south) on 2nd Street. When the road turns do not follow it – continue on the straight\, older road. VDONWR is located at 7851 2nd Street SW\, look for the black mail box on right hand side of the road. \nIf this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leaders\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768 or Erin\, (406) 781-1666 & John\, (505) 999-9182 Salinas\, egaberla@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Trail Workshop Practical
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Trail Construction and Maintenance \nLeaders: Larry Benson\, 505-821-7999\, LawRBenson@aol.com and Chris Fritzche\, 505-504-3768\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com. \nIn partnership with REI and the Albuquerque Open Space Division\, the New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors is conducting its annual 2-part Trail Construction and Maintenance Workshop on Thursday March 16 and Saturday March 18. The first session will be held in the Albuquerque REI store and the second at the City of Albuquerque’s Elena Gallegos Open Space in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. Experienced trail workers are invited to come to the outdoors session and help train those who attended the classroom session. \nStarting at 6:00 pm on Thursday March 16\, the indoor workshop will be offered courtesy of the REI Store\, 1550 Mercantile NE (near the intersection of I-25 and Montgomery). Two experienced NMVFO project leaders\, will discuss the fundamentals of trail work with an illustrated presentation featuring recent projects on public lands throughout New Mexico. Two U.S. Forest Service videos will also help show how volunteers safely refurbish and improve trails. The presenters will answer questions and provide a list of NMVFO projects scheduled in 2017. Those who want to attend the March 16 classroom session need to sign up no later than March 14 at the Albuquerque REI web site! https://www.rei.com/stores/albuquerque.html. \nOn Saturday\, March 18\, the attendees at the REI store will have the chance to get some practical OJT by improving a trail in the Elena Gallegos Open Space. Albuquerque Open Space employees and experienced NMVFO volunteers will help demonstrate trail work techniques. Everyone will need to wear sturdy boots (no soft shoes!)\, work gloves\, long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, and other appropriate protection from the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with snacks\, water\, and personal items. \nWe’ll meet not later than 8:00 am in the Kiwanis Group Shelter. To get there\, turn east on Simms Park Road (located along Tramway between Academy Road and San Rafael Ave.) and drive about 1.3 miles to the park’s entrance. Tell the attendant you are a volunteer worker (to avoid the entrance fee)\, make a hard left turn immediately in back of the visitors center\, and drive a half mile north to the parking lot for the group picnic shelter. Starbucks coffee\, fruit\, and snacks will be available to those who arrive early enough. We’ll then carpool to one of the park’s trailheads and hike to the work site\, where experienced Open Space workers will help supervise the volunteers in how to enhance and re-route trail segments. NMVFO members and other experienced trail workers are also invited to help demonstrate proper techniques. Depending on attendance\, we’ll probably finish work no later than mid-afternoon\, but volunteers are welcome to leave early if needed. To sign up contact Larry at LawRBenson@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Piedra Lisa Trail
DESCRIPTION:We will be working with the Friends of Piedra Lisa on their adopted trail in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. They maintain a protected species closure area that needs to be re-signed for the public. \nWork will include postings and installation of new signs where old ones have been vandalized or stolen. We will also be doing general trail maintenance along the upper half of the trail. This will primarily involve water bar clean out/repair and check dam construction/repair in areas of severe water damage. \nBecause the posting of the signs is required for enforcement of the closure\, this project will take place regardless of weather conditions. So bring your lunch\, plenty of water\, lots of sunscreen and dress in layers. \nWe will meet at the trailhead at 08:30 AM and begin our hike to the work area. We will be working much of the two miles of the trail\, but be advised that the grade is steep with an elevation gain of 1200’ in those two miles\, so come prepared for a good work out that will help you lose some of that Christmas pudding and Mardi Gras gumbo you smeared on yourself!   There are plenty of great places to stop and rest on your way up while enjoying some spectacular views. \nFor more information about this trail – visit this link: \nhttp://www.backpacker.com/trips/new-mexico/albuquerque/albuquerque-nm-piedra-lisa-south/#bp=0/img1 \nDue to limitations placed on use by the USFS\, space is limited to 10 volunteers. You must also be a US Citizen per USFS requirements.  This is a hard hat project\, so bring yours or one will be provided for you. Due to the space limitations it is mandatory that you contact the project leader to register for this project or you could be turned away at the trailhead. We appreciate your understanding.

SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be kicking off the 2017 VFO project year. And forget Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow\, doing a VFO project guarantees an early spring. \nJoin us at the Sevilleta just 50 miles south of Albuquerque where we will be participating in a unique one day project in a remote section of the refuge. Instead of trail work\, we will be planting willows to improve habitat for the nesting of the willow flycatcher. That means we might get a little dirty\,but no pick mattocks\, rock bars or McLeods. We’ve done this project before and it’s a lot of fun plus we get to work in a seldom visited section of this huge refuge as well as being able to learn a lot from the staff and volunteers who work there. \nWe will set up a location for carpooling and volunteers will need to bring their own lunch and any snacks. Bathing suits are optional. For more information or to sign up for the project contact Jon Blakey at jblakey102@gmail.com (735) 255-5251 or Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com (505) 385-0517.

SUMMARY:Last Chance Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Legend has it that a small group of ranchers pursuing cattle stolen by Apaches had run out of water and were suffering from severe dehydration (obviously they missed the VFO safety talk).  They only had one more opportunity to find water and\, if the arroyo they followed was dry\, they would probably die.  Luck was with them on this\, their last chance. \nThis is also the last chance to attend a VFO project this year.  So fling the remote\, toss the Doritos\, roll off the couch and join us in the little known Guadalupe Mountains.  We’ll be doing erosion control and trail repair in this beautiful canyon and\, if lucky\, may even be able to take a dip in pools of clear water.  We’ll work all day Friday and Saturday and half a day on Sunday.  VFO\, in the guise of all-star cook Gary Holcomb\, will be supplying Friday and Saturday dinner and breakfast Friday through Sunday.  Each of us will be responsible for our own lunch which we’ll eat on the trail \nFor those who have time\, not only will you be able to see Sitting Bull Falls (also a unique name and it’s not for the famous chief) and other parts of the Lincoln National Forest but also have the opportunity to visit nearby Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. \nTo sign up or find out more contact Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com\, 505-385-0517 or Kenda Willey at kenda9952@gmail.com 575-840-1080. \nSign up deadline is Monday\, October 24.  We hope to see you on the trail.

DESCRIPTION:Please\, join us 22 October for annual maintenance of the Pino Trail\, the NMVFO’s Adopt-A-Trail in the Sandia Wilderness.  This year\, we move a little further up the trail from where we left off last year.  Work continues on building and repairing stone steps\, repairing and improving drainage and narrowing the corridor on one of Albuquerque’s most popular and heavily travelled trails.  By my estimates\, we’ll be working a mile or slightly more up the trail from the Wilderness Boundary this year. \nGroup size is currently limited to a total of 20 people.  Please\, continue to sign up for the waitlist; someone already on the participant list may need to drop\, requirements may change in favor of a larger group\, etc.  As our intention is to have maximum allowable participation\, please sign up and/or confirm by October 19th so that wait-listed folks can be informed of open positions as soon as possible prior to the project date. \nVolunteers will need to bring water\, snacks\, and their own lunch.  Long pants\, long sleeves\, appropriate sturdy footwear with slip-resistant soles (no sandals\, flip-flops\, etc)\, work gloves and hard hats (provided) are REQUIRED per USFS regulations. \nWe’ll assemble at the Pino Trailhead in the Elena Gallegos Open Space at 8:30 AM on 15 October.  From I-40\, take Exit 167 and travel north 6.2 miles on Tramway Blvd (NM 556) to Simms Park Rd\, turn right (east) on Simms Park Rd and travel 1.4 miles to the Elena Gallegos park entrance.  Parking permits will be provided when you arrive\, so just turn right at the entrance and follow the VFO signs about 0.4 miles to the parking lot.  From I-25\, take Exit 234 and travel east on Tramway Rd for 7.1 miles before turning left (east) onto on Simms Park Rd.  From there\, follow the directions above. \nIf this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768.

SUMMARY:Hermit's Peak
DESCRIPTION:Join the NMVFO as we work on a trail re-route for the Hermit Peak trail. This trail ultimately ascends to Hermit Peak which is located within the Pecos Wilderness and stands over 10\,000’ elevation\, forming a prominent landmark which can be seen for many miles from the grasslands of eastern New Mexico. The peak is named after an Italian missionary who lived in a cave near the summit in the mid 1860s. The trail section which we will be working on to establish new tread is located just a short distance from the trailhead at El Porvenir campground\, where we will be camping. The campground is accessible by automobile. Volunteers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.) as well as a plate\, bowl\, cup and eating utensils. \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. Also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection\, plenty of drinking water and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. Tools will be provided. \nParticipants can start to show up at the El Porvenir Campground at noon on Thursday\, and we hope that all folks have arrived and set up their camps by Thursday dinner so that we can have a project meeting to go over details and safety considerations after dinner. \nMeals will be cooked by an award-winning trail chef who has supported numerous NMVFO and Continental Divide Trail Coalition projects with very tasty meals that really keep you going! Meals provided include from dinner Thursday night to lunch on Sunday. We hope that volunteers can stay for the entire project\, but let the project leader know when you sign up if you can only commit to a shorter schedule. The sign-up deadline is Thursday\, September 1. Contact Project Leader Mark Kimmel at 505-239-8240 or m_kimmel@q.com with any questions\, and/or to sign up for the project. \n– Start Date & Time: Thursday\, September 8\, 2016 at 12:00PM \n– End Date & Time: Sunday\, September 11\, 2016 at 12:00PM \n– Meeting Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/El+Porvenir+Campground/@35.7105763\,-105.4141567\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x7deaa8fc7b24f418!8m2!3d35.7102552!4d-105.4119636 \nPlease visit this link http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq/ if you have any questions about what to expect on an NMVFO project.

SUMMARY:Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Come work on trails at the scenic Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument! Tent Rocks\, which is a short drive from Albuquerque or Santa Fe\, contains a unique and stunning landscape. The National Monument includes a national recreation trail and a Veterans’ Memorial Trail\, and ranges from 5\,570 feet to 6\,760 feet above sea level. The cone-shaped tent rock formations are the products of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago and left pumice\, ash\, and tuff deposits over 1\,000 feet thick. \nWe will be working on the National Recreation Trail\, which passes by a cave and through a slot canyon\, and the Veterans’ Memorial Trail\, a 1-mile loop trail near our campsite. Volunteers can camp Friday and Saturday night at the Veteran’s Memorial Scenic Overlook area. This is a very unique opportunity as camping is not normally allowed at the Monument. Meals provided will be breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning\, as well as dinner Saturday evening. If you plan to eat with us\, please bring your own camp dinnerware. Dinner on Friday evening and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be on your own. \nVolunteers need to bring their own camping equipment\, and should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. They should also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water\, and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. Tools will be provided. \nVault toilets will be available near the camp site. Potable water is not available at the Monument but will be available at our campsite. \nPlease sign up for the project no later than 12:00 pm on Tuesday\, August 23. \nOur campsite/meeting spot will be at the following location:  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kasha-Katuwe+Tent+Rocks+National+Monument\,+Cochiti\,+NM+87072/@35.6726054\,-106.453253\,21z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x87187099ff21bec1:0x28874e911e116d2f!8m2!3d35.662446!4d-106.4146067 \nPlease visit this link http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq/ if you have any questions about what to expect on an NMVFO project.

SUMMARY:Bluewater Lake State Park
DESCRIPTION:Bluewater Lake State Park is an unexpected oasis a few miles west of grants off I-40 and just east of the Continental Divide. In addition to the park being one of New Mexico’s oldest trout fishing reservoirs\, it also boasts 68 species of birds calling the park home\, or passing through the park on their annual migrations. The most startling are the Canyonside and Dam Trails kept cool and lush by the Bluewater Creek and along which signs of wild horses and beaver are prevalent. Lucky for us\, the area along the Bluewater Creek is where we’ll be working during this project. \nCamping at the group shelter will be available Friday\, July 15th through Sunday\, July 17th. RV connections are not available at the group shelter\, but are at other park campsites. Potable water and bathrooms are located near the group shelter. NMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night. PLEASE\, BRING YOUR OWN CAMP DINNER WARE. Bring water bottles/packs\, daypack\, lunches and snacks\, and a camp chair is a good idea\, long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, work gloves\, work boots\, sun protection\, raingear (just in case)\,. Carpooling is encouraged. Please sign up for this project by Tuesday\, July 12th so that our meal coordinator can match provisions to participants. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nThe section of trail we’ll be working on is just under a mile in total length with trail heads never more than a half mile from the group shelter. The agency has set task priorities based on greatest to least impact\, although all of the work is needed. Priority #1 is to fix canyon wall descent on the most north-eastern edge of the Canyonside Trail. This will require a reroute of a few hundred feet and some rock work. Priority #2 is to block off\, obliterate\, and rehabilitate two sections\, one a former trail and the other an unauthorized ATV user trail. The third set of priorities are to improve creek crossings and improve the Pinon Cliffs Trail by building stairs and removing loose rocks and debris. \nTo get to Bluewater Lake State Park exit I-40 at exit 63\, turn left on State Highway 412 and follow for 7 miles. This road dead ends at the park entrance. The group shelter is ¼ mile from the entrance on the left hand side just beyond the ranger station. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area. Work will begin Saturday\, July 16th at 8:00 am and Sunday\, July 17th at the same start time\, but we’ll finish up around noon. \nIf this is your first NMVFO camping project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768. \nFor an overview of the project\, click here.

SUMMARY:St. Peter's Dome Trail
DESCRIPTION:For a printable project description\, click here. \nAfter working in from the north or south trailheads for the past several years\, we will begin restoring the middle portion of the St. Peters Dome Trail (Santa Fe National Forest Trail #118). To reach the work area\, we’ll need to hike approximately 3 miles from the south trailhead into the remote Dome Wilderness\, down cliff-lined Sanchez Canyon\, and up toward Picacho Peak. Because of wildfires in 1992 and 2011\, rugged and scenic vistas are unobstructed\, but shade will be scarce and the hiking somewhat strenuous. Under the guidance of Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District\, we will clear brush and any deadfall blocking the trail\, build cairns\, and improve the trail tread with outsloping\, rolling dips\, water bars\, and other drainage features as needed. USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy (and comfortable) boots\, and work gloves. Also bring a day pack\, hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and—if precipitation is in the forecast—a rain jacket or poncho. For additional guidance\, please consult http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. (Because of blowing dust\, contact lenses may be uncomfortable if strong winds are predicted.) In addition to carrying a tool\, you will need to pack in your own lunch and plenty of water. Extra bottled water and other drinks will be available from a cooler at the trailhead. \n \nAs shown by the accompanying map\, our meeting place is a relatively short commute from either Albuquerque or Santa Fe. Take I-25 to Exit 264\, then west on NM 16 and NM 22 past the dam to the Cochiti Convenience Store on the right. Park in the gravel lot to the left of the store\, which has coffee\, pastries and other snacks\, as well as restrooms. Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM\, when we will carpool in high-clearance vehicles to the trailhead\, which is a few miles up Forest Road 289. (The gate for FR 289 is on the right side of NM 22 about 3/4 mile past the Cochiti Golf Course.) For anyone who would like to stay nearby overnight\, the Corps of Engineers operates two campgrounds at Cochiti Lake (minimum fee: $5.00. Please sign up with the project leader by May 12.

SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:For a printable project description\, click here. \nCome help build a permanent naturalistic drinker for thirsty wildlife in the hilly eastern part of the vast Sevillita Wildlife Refuge. In addition to wetlands along the Rio Grande\, the Refuge’s 230\,000 acres include four different biomes—Chihuahuan desert\, Great Plains short grassland prairie\, pinon juniper woodland\, and Colorado Plateau shrub steppe—providing habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. The animals needing this new drinker range from bears (who have damaged artificial drinkers) to bats (who can drink only while flying over an area of open water). To construct the new drinker\, we’ll line a shallow 12 by 18-foot depression with landscaping fabric and cover the surface with rocks embedded in concrete. The large surface and gently slopped edges of this virtual pond will accommodate numerous reptiles\, birds\, and mammals. \nPreparations: Volunteers should wear long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sturdy boots or work shoes (not soft shoes)\, work gloves\, hat\, sunglasses\, and bring a day pack with sunscreen\, plenty of water\, snacks\, and lunch. It’s likely to be hot and sunny\, but if rain is in the forecast\, pack a poncho or waterproof jacket. No toilet facilities will be available\, so you may also want to bring sanitizer and tissue. Additional guidance is available at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. Register for the project by sending an email to the project leaders as soon as possible but no later than May 3. Please indicate if you’d like to offer or obtain a ride\, and they will try to coordinate ride sharing. \nDirections: We will meet at the far northeastern corner of the refuge. As shown in the accompanying map\, take I-25 south from Albuquerque about 50 miles to US Highway 60 (Exit 169) and drive east approximately 16 miles (where the road curves south into the Los Pinos Mountains). Look on your left for a faded blue elephant statue in front of the closed Blue Springs Cafe. In about 100 more yards\, turn right onto a dirt road (where a green NMVFO sign should be visible) and park just past the gate. (To locate on Google Maps\, enter 34°25’16.6″N 106°31’03.6″W.) Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM. We’ll then carpool in high clearance vehicles to the work site\, about 6 miles to the south.

SUMMARY:Datil Well Campground
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend in the Historic Datil Mountains and visit the Very Large Array. Datil Well was one of 15 former water wells spaced every ten miles along the historic Magdalena Livestock Driveway that once stretched 120 miles from Springerville\, AZ to Magdalena\, NM. We will camp Friday and Saturday nights at the Group Shelter site which has fresh well water\, vault toilets\, shady tent sites and plenty of room for parking to include RVs. There is a motel in nearby Datil for those who do not wish to camp. \nEnjoy beautiful overlooks of the San Augustin Plains from the trails from as we take on three sections of the Datil Well Loop—the sections (all within the same general area) have been prioritized to facilitate completion of some or all depending upon group size\, weather\, or other difficulties. Priority #1 is ~800 foot reroute of a badly eroded fall line section. Priority #2 will be fixing drainage along the east section leading up to the choke point just prior to the reroute.  There really is no way of re-routing this section\, so I figured the best option is to just do a better job at managing the drainage. Priority #3 is another ~500 foot re-route just above the other reroute section.  The existing section is a little steep and heavily rutted.  The re-route section follows the contour better and has more shade. The hike to the furthest point of the work area from the campground is slightly more than a half mile (0.6 miles). \nNMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night. Bring water bottles/packs\, daypack\, lunches and snacks\, and a camp chair is a good idea long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, work gloves\, work boots\, sun protection\, raingear (just in case)\,. Carpooling is encouraged. Please sign up for this project by Tuesday\, April 26th so that our meal coordinator (Micky Hogue) can match provisions to participants.  Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nDatil is 61 miles west of Socorro on US Hwy 60. The campground is ¼ mile south of Datil on Hwy 12. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area. Work will begin Saturday\, April 30th at 8:00 am and Sunday\, May 1st at the same start time\, but we’ll finish up around noon. \nIf this is your first NMVFO camping project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768. \nClick here for a printable project description.

SUMMARY:Trail Workshop Practical
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about how the trails you hike or bike on are built and sustained? In partnership with REI and the Albuquerque Open Space Division\, the New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors is conducting a 2-part introduction to trail construction and maintenance on March 17 and 19. \nOn Thursday March 17 at 6:00 pm\, an indoor workshop will be offered at the REI Store\, 1550 Mercantile NE. Two experienced NMVFO project leaders will discuss the fundamentals of trail work with an illustrated presentation featuring recent projects on public lands throughout New Mexico and a display of various tools used. Two U.S. Forest Service videos will also show how volunteers refurbish and improve trails. The presenters will answer questions and provide a list of NMVFO projects scheduled in 2016. Please register for this class at http://www.rei.com/events/nmvfo-trail-construction-maintenance-workshop/albuquerque/133528. \nAfter attending the indoor class at the REI Store on March 17\, those interested in practicing how to do trail work will have the chance for some on-the-job training at the Simms Park/Elena Gallegos Open Space on Saturday\, March 19\, under the auspices of the Albuquerque Open Space Division. Experienced trail workers are also invited to help demonstrate techniques and provide guidance. Here’s a photo from last year’s field training: \n \nWe’ll meet at the Kiwanis Group Shelter on Saturday no later than 8:00 AM.  Some fruit and snacks will be provided\, and Starbucks coffee will be available for those who come early enough.  We’ll then carpool to a trail head\, pick up tools\, and hike to the work area.  Participants should dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy boots\, long pants\, long sleeve shirts\, work gloves\, and sun protection.  Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, and other necessities.  We should be finished by mid-afternoon\, but participants may leave early if necessary. \nDirections: From Tramway Blvd between Academy and Paseo Del Norte\, take Simms Road east toward the mountains. Just past the visitors’ center at the entrance\, immediately turn left and take the road going north about 3/10 mile to the parking lot in front of the Kiwanis Picnic Shelter. \nExperienced NMVFO volunteers who would like to help on March 19 should notify Larry Benson at LawRBenson@aol.com and Chris Fritzsche at fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com by March 17.
