SUMMARY:Hermit's Peak
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow volunteers with NMVFO as we continue work on a trail re-route for the Hermit Peak trail.\nThis trail ultimately ascends to Hermit Peak which is located within the Pecos Wilderness and stands\nover 10\,000’ elevation\, forming a prominent landmark which can be seen for many miles from the\ngrasslands of eastern New Mexico. The peak is named after an Italian missionary who lived in a cave\nnear the summit in the mid 1860s. We will be camping at the El Porvenir Christian Camp which is a\nshort walk from the section of trail which we will work on. The campground is accessible by automobile.\nVolunteers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.) as well as a plate\,\nbowl\, cup and eating utensils. El Porvenir Christian Camp is providing us level tent sites and access to\nrestrooms and hot showers! \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and\nwork gloves. Also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection\, and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal.\nDrinking water is available in camp\, but bring some water bottles. Tools and hard-hats will be provided.\nParticipants can start to show up at the El Porvenir Campground at noon on Thursday\, and we hope that\nall folks have arrived and set up their camp by Thursday dinner so that we can have a project meeting to\ngo over details and safety considerations after dinner. \nMeals will be cooked by an award-winning trail chef who has supported numerous projects with very\ntasty meals. All meals\, from dinner Thursday night to lunch on Sunday\, will be provided. SUMMARY:Via Posada Trail Network
DESCRIPTION:Help us finish improving this urban trail network. This 40-acre portion of the Albuquerque’s Open Space is nestled between the long-established Four Hills neighborhood and the new Juan Tabo Hills development to its west. The area is heavily used by local walkers\, joggers\, dog owners\, and bike riders. Over the past few years city employees with help from NMVFO and other volunteers have refurbished or re-routed most of the trail network to alleviate the effects of erosion and help restore the natural landscape. We hope today’s project will complete this work\, which consists of clearing vegetation\, smoothing and reshaping trail surfaces to improve drainage\, moving and placing rocks as needed\, blocking off closed trail sections\, transplanting cacti\, and related work. Volunteers should wear sturdy boots (no soft shoes)\, work gloves\, long pants\, sun protection\, and a day pack with plenty of water\, snacks\, a light lunch\, and a waterproof jacket or poncho if rain is in the forecast. There will be a porta-potty at the trailhead. Coffee\, juice\, and pastries will be available for those who arrive early enough. Please sign up by September 14. \nDirections: We’ll meet at the trailhead next to 724 Via Posada SE (35°03’14.3″N 106°30’24.7″W). From the east end of Central Ave (near I-40 Exit 167)\, travel south on Four Hills Road 7/10 mile. Veer right (west) on Stagecoach Road for 4/10 of a mile. SUMMARY:Manzano Mountains State Park
DESCRIPTION:This peaceful\, secluded park nestled in the Ponderosa pine forest of the Manzano Mountains has 3 miles of trail that needs some drainage and tread improvements. Come help for a day or the whole weekend. Tent\, car\, and RV camping will be available at the Group Shelter on Friday and Saturday nights. Meals will be provided on Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning by one of the VFO’s gourmet cooks. You can bring your own box lunch for Saturday noon. Volunteers should wear sturdy boots (no soft shoes)\, work gloves\, long pants\, long-sleeve shirts\, sun protection\, and a day pack with water container(s)\, snacks\, and a water-resistant jacket or poncho if rain is in the forecast. \nDirections: Take Exit 175 from Interstate 40 in Tijeras. Drive south on NM 337 for 30 miles. Turn west on NM 55\, which soon curves to the south\, and continue for 20 miles through the village of Manzano. Once past the church and wide spot in the road\, veer right onto NM 131 (Look for a NM parks sign). Then follow the black top at every option to get to the park. The only time you should be on dirt is just past the cattle guard flanked by the white pipe park entry gate. Follow the dirt road uphill to the campground. SUMMARY:Datil Well Campground
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a weekend in the Historic Datil Mountains and visit the Very Large Array. Datil Well was one of 15 former water wells spaced every ten miles along the historic Magdalena Livestock Driveway that once stretched 120 miles from Springerville\, AZ to Magdalena\, NM. We will camp Friday and Saturday nights at the Group Shelter site which has fresh well water\, vault toilets\, shady tent sites and plenty of room for parking to include RVs. There is a motel in nearby Datil for those who do not wish to camp.\n\n\nDatil is 61 miles west of Socorro on US Hwy 60. The campground is ¼ mile south of Datil on Hwy 12. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area. Work will begin Saturday\, August 12th at 8:00 am and Sunday\, August 13th at the same start time\, but we’ll finish up around noon

SUMMARY:Quemado Lake
DESCRIPTION:We’re back.  Lend a hand at beautiful Quemado Lake as we finish up the work of brushing and erosion control on the Largo Canyon Trail that we began last year.  We’ll also take the time to do work along the lovely Sawmill Canyon Trail.  We’ll begin by working all day Friday\, June 30\, the same on Saturday\, July 1 and half a day Sunday\, July 2. Hopefully we will again see bald eagles as they finish up their nesting. \nWe have one of the group campsites reserved for us.  It has plenty of tent sites or you can bring an RV or sleep in your vehicle.  The site also has a shelter with tables and vault toilets.  Our cooks\, Jackie and Marcy\, will be supplying breakfasts on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday and dinners on Friday and Saturday.  Volunteer are responsible for their own lunches\, which we will eat on the trail\, as well as beverages\, adult or other wise. \nThis project is limited to 12 volunteers.  The last day to sign up is Sunday\, June 25.  To join the project or get more information please contact Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com or 505-385-0517.

SUMMARY:Skyline Backpack
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with NMVFO as we repair a very scenic trail high up in the Pecos Wilderness! We will make our basecamp at the meadows of Puerto Nambe and work to repair the Skyline Trail as it climbs from the meadows to a saddle on the side of Santa Fe Baldy. This project will receive horse-packing support from the Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA)\, who will pack in all of our food and cooking equipment the 4 miles from trailhead to basecamp. Speaking of cooking\, all meals\, inclusive\, starting with dinner on June 22 and ending with lunch on June 26\, will be provided by an award-winning trail chef who really knows how to cook up a tasty meal in the backcountry! Water will be available in the area around basecamp. The trail work will include tread repair and some trail re-routing. All tools will be provided. Since we will be camping near the trail that we will be working on\, the hike from camp to work site is short. \nWe will meet at the large parking lot near the Winsor Trail trailhead at 10:00AM on Thursday\, June 22nd and backpack in along the Winsor Trail the 4 miles from trailhead to basecamp. The project ends on Monday\, June 26th at noon. Our basecamp at Puerto Nambe is in a large meadow area interspersed with forested areas at an elevation of 11\,000’. The dates of this project were chosen to be late enough in the year to give the snow pack a chance to melt\, but early enough to be before the monsoon season really kicks off. Of course\, weather in the mountains is tough to predict\, so please prepare well. Volunteers will need to provide all of their own backpacking gear (except for food and cooking equipment)\, including their own backpack\, tent and sleeping bag suitable for high-altitude\, possibly cold-weather camping. Also bring a plate\, bowl\, cup and utensils. Volunteers also need to bring good work gloves\, long-sleeved shirts\, long pants and sturdy boots. Rain gear\, hat and sunscreen will also be needed. Plan to bring a small daypack and water bottles\, plus any trail snacks desired. Hard hats will need to be worn while working\, and will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own hardhat if you have one.

DESCRIPTION:The El Nogal Area hosts several popular multiuse trails where you can see an array of wildflowers and incredible views of Taos\, the Rio Grande\, San Antonio Mountain\, and Wheeler Peak. We will be working on Devisadero Trail\, South Boundary Trail\, Ojitos Canyon Trail\, and Mondragon Trail\, doing trail maintenance including removal of deadfall\, brushing back encroaching vegetation\, step construction\, tread restoration\, and signage installation. \nCamping will be available Friday\, June 17th through noon Sunday\, June 18th. Potable water and portable bathrooms are located nearby. The campsite is on the eastern edge of Taos\, so all town amenities will be available. NMVFO will provide breakfast Saturday and Sunday\, dinner Saturday night. Carpooling is encouraged. Registration for this project is required for planning purposes; please sign up for this project no later than 12:00 PM on Tuesday\, June 13th so that we can match provisions to participants. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nEl Nogal Campground is located approximately 3 miles east of Taos and can be reached via U.S. Highway 64. \nFrom Taos Plaza\, take Kit Carson Road (U.S. 64) east 2.8 miles into Taos Canyon to the trailhead parking lot at El Nogal camping area.

SUMMARY:Golden Open Space
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Open Space\, acquired in 1964\, consists of 1\,180 acres of rugged terrain and is among some of the first properties set aside by the City of Albuquerque for the preservation of nature. Breathtaking views of mesas\, colorful arroyos and several mountain ranges make this remote and seldom-visited property a great escape from the city. We will be building new trail as part of the City of Albuquerque’s trail system at the Golden Open Space\, which is located just north of the San Pedro Creek Estates\, off NM 14. Whether approaching from Albuquerque or Santa Fe\, come by NM 14 (aka HWY 337); near the Bernalillo/Sandoval county line\, turn on to Via Entrada through San Pedro Creek Estates. Access granted only for the project through private property; detailed directions will be provided to volunteers later. \nWe intend to rendezvous with Jim Sattler\, Assistant Open Space Superintendent\, no later than 8:30 AM on Saturday\, May and begin work shortly thereafter. SUMMARY:Valles Caldera National Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Valles Caldera National Preserve located 78 miles northwest of Albuquerque\, where we will be participating in an initial one day trail repair project. We will be removing dead-fall trees and limbs on a northernmost trail of the Caldera that has seen few if any hikers since the Las Conchas fire in 2011. That means we will drive several miles back into a remote area using four-wheel drive vehicles\, hike and/or ATV up to three miles on the identified trail\, assist certified crosscut saw and chainsaw folks with the removal of on fallen trees/limbs\, and repair trail paths using pick mattocks\, McLeods\, Pulaskis\, handsaws\, loppers\, and possibly rock bars. If we have too many volunteers (not likely)\, preferences will be given to volunteers with crosscut saw certification and/or high clearance 4wd vehicles due to the nature of this project. Be prepared for a good workout.

SUMMARY:Airstrip Mesa Trail
DESCRIPTION:Interested in lending a hand in a remote and seldom visited part of western New Mexico? If so\, join us at Airstrip Mesa near Luna\, New Mexico in the Apache National Forest which is administered by the Gila. What we’ll be doing is reopening an old trail that will provide a loop with the Trout Creek Trail. Our job will be to reconstruct tread and do some heavy duty brushing of the trail. We’ll work all day Friday and Saturday and half a day on Sunday. \nThis will be a car camp near our work site. We will not be in an organized campground; instead\, we’ll be in an out of the way area that offers a lot of solitude. The VFO will be supplying breakfast on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday plus dinner on Friday and Saturday. Each of us will be responsible for our own lunches\, snacks and beverages\, adult or otherwise. Most folks will arrive Thursday afternoon and work the 2 ½ days. If\, however\, your schedule doesn’t permit\, you can join us anytime on Friday or even Saturday morning. \nWe will be at about 7\,000 feet so we can expect just about any kind of weather in late April. SUMMARY:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (VODNWR)\, the Southwest’s first urban refuge will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people on 570 acres of a former dairy farm just five miles south of downtown Albuquerque on the Rio Grande. The refuge has little infrastructure and the beginnings of a trail system for us to maintain\, therefore we’re a big part of whatever it will become! This year we’ll be expanding and improving what exists while laying the foundation for the future. \nThere has been a change in scope: this year we’ll be assisting the refuge with native species restoration by planting several hundred Cottonwood saplings in the bosque area along the Rio Grande (click here for proposed planting area). We won’t be the only volunteer group in attendance; we’ll be accompanied by 30-40 volunteers from the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation\, 40 or so volunteers from Wild Earth Guardians\, a troop of Boy Scouts and I would expect a few folks from the Friends of Valle De Oro. \nWe intend to rendezvous with Jennifer Owen-White\, the Refuge Manager\, around 8:30 AM on Saturday\, April 1st and begin work around 9:00 AM; we anticipate ending around 2:00 PM. Volunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (absolutely no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes)\, work gloves; helmets and eye protection are highly recommended. Also\, bring sun and rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water and snacks. SUMMARY:Piedra Lisa Trail
DESCRIPTION:We will be working with the Friends of Piedra Lisa on their adopted trail in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. They maintain a protected species closure area that needs to be re-signed for the public. \nWork will include postings and installation of new signs where old ones have been vandalized or stolen. We will also be doing general trail maintenance along the upper half of the trail. This will primarily involve water bar clean out/repair and check dam construction/repair in areas of severe water damage. \nBecause the posting of the signs is required for enforcement of the closure\, this project will take place regardless of weather conditions. So bring your lunch\, plenty of water\, lots of sunscreen and dress in layers. \nWe will meet at the trailhead at 08:30 AM and begin our hike to the work area. We will be working much of the two miles of the trail\, but be advised that the grade is steep with an elevation gain of 1200’ in those two miles\, so come prepared for a good work out that will help you lose some of that Christmas pudding and Mardi Gras gumbo you smeared on yourself!   There are plenty of great places to stop and rest on your way up while enjoying some spectacular views. \nFor more information about this trail – visit this link: \nhttp://www.backpacker.com/trips/new-mexico/albuquerque/albuquerque-nm-piedra-lisa-south/#bp=0/img1 \nDue to limitations placed on use by the USFS\, space is limited to 10 volunteers. SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be kicking off the 2017 VFO project year. And forget Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow\, doing a VFO project guarantees an early spring. \nJoin us at the Sevilleta just 50 miles south of Albuquerque where we will be participating in a unique one day project in a remote section of the refuge. Instead of trail work\, we will be planting willows to improve habitat for the nesting of the willow flycatcher. That means we might get a little dirty\,but no pick mattocks\, rock bars or McLeods. We’ve done this project before and it’s a lot of fun plus we get to work in a seldom visited section of this huge refuge as well as being able to learn a lot from the staff and volunteers who work there. \nWe will set up a location for carpooling and volunteers will need to bring their own lunch and any snacks. SUMMARY:Last Chance Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Legend has it that a small group of ranchers pursuing cattle stolen by Apaches had run out of water and were suffering from severe dehydration (obviously they missed the VFO safety talk).  They only had one more opportunity to find water and\, if the arroyo they followed was dry\, they would probably die.  Luck was with them on this\, their last chance. \nThis is also the last chance to attend a VFO project this year.  So fling the remote\, toss the Doritos\, roll off the couch and join us in the little known Guadalupe Mountains.  We’ll be doing erosion control and trail repair in this beautiful canyon and\, if lucky\, may even be able to take a dip in pools of clear water.  We’ll work all day Friday and Saturday and half a day on Sunday.  VFO\, in the guise of all-star cook Gary Holcomb\, will be supplying Friday and Saturday dinner and breakfast Friday through Sunday.  Each of us will be responsible for our own lunch which we’ll eat on the trail \nFor those who have time\, not only will you be able to see Sitting Bull Falls (also a unique name and it’s not for the famous chief) and other parts of the Lincoln National Forest but also have the opportunity to visit nearby Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. \nTo sign up or find out more contact Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com\, 505-385-0517 or Kenda Willey at kenda9952@gmail.com 575-840-1080. \nSign up deadline is Monday\, October 24.  We hope to see you on the trail.

DESCRIPTION:Please\, join us 22 October for annual maintenance of the Pino Trail\, the NMVFO’s Adopt-A-Trail in the Sandia Wilderness.  This year\, we move a little further up the trail from where we left off last year.  Work continues on building and repairing stone steps\, repairing and improving drainage and narrowing the corridor on one of Albuquerque’s most popular and heavily travelled trails.  By my estimates\, we’ll be working a mile or slightly more up the trail from the Wilderness Boundary this year. \nGroup size is currently limited to a total of 20 people.  Please\, continue to sign up for the waitlist; someone already on the participant list may need to drop\, requirements may change in favor of a larger group\, etc.  As our intention is to have maximum allowable participation\, please sign up and/or confirm by October 19th so that wait-listed folks can be informed of open positions as soon as possible prior to the project date. \nVolunteers will need to bring water\, snacks\, and their own lunch.  Long pants\, long sleeves\, appropriate sturdy footwear with slip-resistant soles (no sandals\, flip-flops\, etc)\, work gloves and hard hats (provided) are REQUIRED per USFS regulations. \nWe’ll assemble at the Pino Trailhead in the Elena Gallegos Open Space at 8:30 AM on 15 October.  From I-40\, take Exit 167 and travel north 6.2 miles on Tramway Blvd (NM 556) to Simms Park Rd\, turn right (east) on Simms Park Rd and travel 1.4 miles to the Elena Gallegos park entrance.  Parking permits will be provided when you arrive\, so just turn right at the entrance and follow the VFO signs about 0.4 miles to the parking lot.  From I-25\, take Exit 234 and travel east on Tramway Rd for 7.1 miles before turning left (east) onto on Simms Park Rd.  From there\, follow the directions above. \nIf this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768.

SUMMARY:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge 4th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (VDONWR)\, the Southwest’s first urban refuge will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people on 570 acres of a former dairy farm just five miles south of downtown Albuquerque on the Rio Grande.  We’ve been lending a hand since the since it was officially named in 2014!  Please\, come out on Saturday\, 24 September and celebrate the birthday of one of our partners and represent the NMVFO.  Be prepared for quite a crowd. SUMMARY:Hermit's Peak
DESCRIPTION:Join the NMVFO as we work on a trail re-route for the Hermit Peak trail. This trail ultimately ascends to Hermit Peak which is located within the Pecos Wilderness and stands over 10\,000’ elevation\, forming a prominent landmark which can be seen for many miles from the grasslands of eastern New Mexico. The peak is named after an Italian missionary who lived in a cave near the summit in the mid 1860s. The trail section which we will be working on to establish new tread is located just a short distance from the trailhead at El Porvenir campground\, where we will be camping. The campground is accessible by automobile. Volunteers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.) as well as a plate\, bowl\, cup and eating utensils. \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. Also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection\, plenty of drinking water and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. SUMMARY:Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Come work on trails at the scenic Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument! Tent Rocks\, which is a short drive from Albuquerque or Santa Fe\, contains a unique and stunning landscape. The National Monument includes a national recreation trail and a Veterans’ Memorial Trail\, and ranges from 5\,570 feet to 6\,760 feet above sea level. The cone-shaped tent rock formations are the products of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago and left pumice\, ash\, and tuff deposits over 1\,000 feet thick. \nWe will be working on the National Recreation Trail\, which passes by a cave and through a slot canyon\, and the Veterans’ Memorial Trail\, a 1-mile loop trail near our campsite. Volunteers can camp Friday and Saturday night at the Veteran’s Memorial Scenic Overlook area. This is a very unique opportunity as camping is not normally allowed at the Monument. Meals provided will be breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning\, as well as dinner Saturday evening. If you plan to eat with us\, please bring your own camp dinnerware. Dinner on Friday evening and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be on your own. \nVolunteers need to bring their own camping equipment\, and should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. They should also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water\, and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. SUMMARY:Sugarite State Park
DESCRIPTION:Come visit Sugarite Canyon State Park with us!  Nature enthusiast will appreciate the abundance of wildlife\, birds\, butterflies\, and wildflowers among the lakes\, creeks\, forests\, and meadows. Those in pursuit of outdoor recreation will enjoy all the possibilities: Fishing\, boating\, hiking\, horseback riding\, hunting\, and camping. \nOver the past few years NMVFO volunteers have diligently tried to repair trail damage and manage the water that has caused it.  We’ll pick up our efforts to repair washed out areas and some deep cuts in the trail.  Our focus will be to fix descending trail\, improve a stream crossing and cut back some of the overgrowth. \nVolunteers can camp Friday and Saturday nights at the Ponderosa Horse Camp; there are motels in Raton for those who do not wish to camp.  Vault toilets are available near the camp site; potable water is available at Lake Alice Campground and shower facilities at the park entrance.  Breakfast Saturday and Sunday and dinner Saturday night may be provided by the NMVFO if someone volunteers as meal coordinator.  PLEASE\, BRING YOUR OWN CAMP DINNER WARE.  Dinner Friday and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be on your own; additionally\, if no meal coordinator volunteers\, all other meals may be on your own.  Please sign up for this project no later than 12:00 PM on Tuesday\, August 9th so that our meal coordinator can match provisions to participants.  Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nWe will rendezvous with the Park Superintendent (or staff) Robert McIvor\, no later than 8:00 AM Saturday and Sunday mornings and begin work shortly thereafter.  Volunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves.  They should also bring sunscreen\, maybe a hat\, rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. \n170 MILES NORTH OF SANTA FE\, NM; 100 MILES NORTH OF LAS VEGAS\, NM; 6 MILES FROM RATON.  TAKE EXIT 452 ON INTERSTATE 25\, TRAVEL EAST ON STATE HIGHWAY 72 FOR 4 MILES TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH STATE HIGHWAY 526\, TRAVEL NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 526 FOR 2 MILES TO THE PARK ENTRANCE.  The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon to help guide volunteers to the campground. \nIf this is your first NMVFO camping project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call me (Chris)\, the project leader\, fritzsche.christopher@gmail.com\, (505) 504-3768.

SUMMARY:Bluewater Lake State Park
DESCRIPTION:Bluewater Lake State Park is an unexpected oasis a few miles west of grants off I-40 and just east of the Continental Divide. In addition to the park being one of New Mexico’s oldest trout fishing reservoirs\, it also boasts 68 species of birds calling the park home\, or passing through the park on their annual migrations. The most startling are the Canyonside and Dam Trails kept cool and lush by the Bluewater Creek and along which signs of wild horses and beaver are prevalent. Lucky for us\, the area along the Bluewater Creek is where we’ll be working during this project. \nCamping at the group shelter will be available Friday\, July 15th through Sunday\, July 17th. RV connections are not available at the group shelter\, but are at other park campsites. Potable water and bathrooms are located near the group shelter. NMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night. PLEASE\, BRING YOUR OWN CAMP DINNER WARE. Bring water bottles/packs\, daypack\, lunches and snacks\, and a camp chair is a good idea\, long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, work gloves\, work boots\, sun protection\, raingear (just in case)\,. Carpooling is encouraged. Please sign up for this project by Tuesday\, July 12th so that our meal coordinator can match provisions to participants. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nThe section of trail we’ll be working on is just under a mile in total length with trail heads never more than a half mile from the group shelter. The agency has set task priorities based on greatest to least impact\, although all of the work is needed. Priority #1 is to fix canyon wall descent on the most north-eastern edge of the Canyonside Trail. This will require a reroute of a few hundred feet and some rock work. Priority #2 is to block off\, obliterate\, and rehabilitate two sections\, one a former trail and the other an unauthorized ATV user trail. The third set of priorities are to improve creek crossings and improve the Pinon Cliffs Trail by building stairs and removing loose rocks and debris. \nTo get to Bluewater Lake State Park exit I-40 at exit 63\, turn left on State Highway 412 and follow for 7 miles. This road dead ends at the park entrance. The group shelter is ¼ mile from the entrance on the left hand side just beyond the ranger station. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area.
