SUMMARY:Juan Tomas (ABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fifteen NMVFO volunteers and two Open Space staff members built 1/3 mile of new trail through the forest in this popular recreation area. The day’s work included clearing and leveling a smooth well-drained tread\, digging and chopping out more than 20 tree stumps plus numerous roots and saplings\, and sawing or lopping branches intruding on the trail. (OS employees had previously laid out the route with pin flags and the felled largest trees with a chain saw.) \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: (This project has been rescheduled from August 20 because of weather.) Albuquerque’s Open Space Division maintains five areas on the east side of the Sandia and Manzanita Mountains. The largest of these is the Juan Tomas Open Space\, which encompasses 1\,290 acres of primarily piñon-juniper and ponderosa forest growing at elevations up to 7\,760 feet. We will be using a variety of tools to clear vegetation and excavate the forest floor to create about a half mile of new trail that is a part of a larger 1.1 mile trail reroute. Construction of some rock retaining walls may also be required. We will hike in about a mile on mostly level ground to the work site. Participants should wear sturdy boots or work shoes (no sandals or soft shoes)\, long pants\, hats\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather\, especially rain gear. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with water\, snacks\, a light lunch\, sunscreen\, hand sanitizer\, and other personal items. We expect to finish by 3:30 PM\, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if necessary. \nMeeting Place: From Albuquerque\, take the Tijeras exit (#175) off Interstate 40 and drive south on State Highway 337 for 9 miles (passing by Juan Tomas Road). Turn east (left) on Oak Flat Road. Continue for about 3 miles (a half mile beyond a dirt parking lot with a pipe gate). Turn into the gravel parking lot on the left side of the road as shown in this satellite view. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 (if the project fills again the waitlist will be reopened) \nSign up below. One person per signup. \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Neglected Mine (Gila NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Four NMVFO volunteers joined forces with volunteers from CDTC to build part of a reroute along the CDT in the Burro Mountains of southern NM.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: In October NMVFO will partner with Continental Divide Trail Coalition\, CDTC\, to address a short but challenging 1.5-mile reroute starting at Jacks Peak Trailhead and working south along the Neglected Mine area in the Burro Mountains. Work will include clearing corridor\, sawing trees and brush\, building trail\, and creating rock retaining walls. This reroute will move the CDT onto sustainable contours and soil types and enhance the user experience along this nationally designated trail. Volunteers will be car camping at Jacks Peak Trailhead or are welcome to commute from Silver City each day. Expect long\, physically demanding workdays from Thursday to Sunday. This is the first of two CDTC projects in 2022 to address the Neglected Mine reroute. \nBreakfast will be provided Thu-Sun\, and dinner will be provided Thu-Sat. Volunteers are asked to bring their own snacks and lunches. Water will be made available\, but please bring extra containers for camping. Required when working with the USFS: work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses okay)\, long pants\, long sleeves\, and boots or sturdy shoes. Tools and hard hats (also required) will be provided. \nNote that CDTC requires all registered volunteers to provide proof of vaccination before attending projects\, with some exceptions. We will adhere to this rule when we partner with them. \nYou can sign up below until Saturday\, October 1. One person per signup. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 12 \nMap: \n \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Valles Caldera Wetland Restoration
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Nineteen NMVFO volunteers joined Steve Vrooman from Keystone Restoration Ecology and Maryann McGraw from Rio Puerco Alliance to re-wet meadow areas in Valles Caldera National Preserve. Volunteers gathered and loaded three trailer loads of large rocks and transported them to dispersed work sites to build one-rock dams and other structures\, helping to plug channels and spread out water in wetland areas. Tasks included plugging gaps in three contour swales and repairing four excavator plugs near the East Fork of the Jemez River. Volunteers also built a culvert inlet structure to raise a pond six inches\, and used sod to repair six plug and pond structures up the main drainage.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\n  \nDescription: On Friday\, October 21\, NMVFO will partner with Rio Puerco Alliance and Keystone Restoration Ecology to help restore a wetland area in the southeast corner of the Valle Grande\, the largest valley in Valles Caldera National Preserve. This is part of a larger New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED) wetlands project\, the East Fork Headwaters Restoration Project\, which will restore 400 acres of the headwaters of the East Fork of the Jemez River. Our job will be to put some finishing touches on the project by building rock dams along a spring-fed channel and a small intermittent creek. The site is close to a road and can be accessed with a short hike. \nMore info about meeting location to follow\, for those who sign up. Hope you can join us! \nPlease sign up below by Tuesday\, October 18. One person per signup. A reminder that pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nThis project is full but you can still sign up to be put on the waitlist. \nGet on the Waitlist

SUMMARY:Valle de Oro NWR (FWS)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: For the next-to-last scheduled project of NMVFO’s 40th Anniversary Year\, a team of 14 NMVFO Volunteers and Valle de Oro staff dismantled old wooden walkways\, cleared wooden debris\, and sorted the material for re-application. The team also cleared over 500 feet of invasive vegetation along the east fence line and bike path. A great crew using impact wrenches\, sawzalls\, hammers\, crowbars and grit worked together to safely complete this unique project at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge\, the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n  \nDescription:  Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge. It serves as an oasis for both wildlife and people. Established in 2012\, the refuge is beginning to transition from agriculture fields to a diversity of native habitats and visitor amenities. \nThe project will entail clearing vegetation\, disassembling wooden walkways\, and sorting material for future disposal. If we have sufficient volunteers\, we will remove invasive species along a perimeter bike path\, and disassemble a small greenhouse for future use by the refuge. We will meet in the Valle de Oro old farm house parking lot at 8:00 AM on Saturday\, October 29\, 2022 to sign in\, review the planned work and conduct a safety briefing. \nVolunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, long sleeve shirts\, eye protection\, and work gloves. Hardhats will be required and provided if you do not have a personal hardhat. Bring sun protection and apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, lunch\, and other necessities. NMVFO will provide all tools required for the project. We plan to finish work by 4:00 pm. Registrants will be updated by email in the week(s) before the project with the latest information. If you are not feeling well on the day of the project\, please text the Project Leader at 505-705-2584. \nDirections:  Valle de Oro is located approximately 10 miles south of Albuquerque’s Big I (Map). Coming from the North\, take Interstate 25 South to Rio Bravo (Exit 220). Go West on Rio Bravo\, then South on Broadway for approximately 2.25 miles. Turn West on Desert\, cross the Railrunner tracks\, then turn South on 2nd Street. After about .75 miles the entrance to Valle de Oro will be on your right. After you enter the Refuge\, take your first right through a gated entry and proceed to the old farm house (the “pink adobe” building). Green NMVFO signs will direct you to the project parking area. Please plan to be there a little before 8:00 AM. \nTo sign up:  Click on the button below and fill out the contact information. If the project is full\, we will start a waitlist.

SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space) CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The Field Workshop is cancelled due to severe weather. \nDescription: This session will build upon skills introduced at the March 11 class for new volunteers\, but anyone is welcome to sign up for either or both sessions. The field training will take place on CABQ Open Space land near Tijeras Creek\, along Route 66 east of Albuquerque. Experienced Open Space personnel and NMVFO members will help mentor volunteers as we re-route an existing trail. Expected tasks include building the new trail segment following a better path identified by pin flags and closing off the old section by covering it with branches and any nearby rocks\, transplanting available cactuses\, and scarifying the surface to slow erosion and encourage new growth. Building the new trail may include clearing or trimming existing plants\, reshaping the trail’s surface to improve drainage\, and reinforcing it with rocks as needed. \nVolunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, and bring work gloves\, hat\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with snacks\, lunch\, sunblock and plenty of water. Registered volunteers will be provided updates by email. \nDirections:  We will meet by 8:30 AM in the parking lot of the Tijeras BioZone Education Center at 15600 Old Route 66. As shown on this map\, if coming from Albuquerque on I-40\, turn south at the Tramway Blvd exit\, then turn left on Central Ave. and continue driving west for 1.2 miles. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 \nCost: Free! \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nSign up by clicking below. If the project is full\, you can email the project leader to be put on a wait list. \nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. SUMMARY:Little Whitewater Trail Backpack (Gila NF) (Date and location change)
DESCRIPTION:(Note: The project dates changed from March 16-19 to March 23-26\, and the location changed to Allie/Bear Loop\, due to weather. The March 30 project originally planned for Allie/Bear was cancelled due to weather.) \nRESULTS: Nine volunteers from the Gila Chapter of Backcountry Horsemen and NMVFO improved 1.75 miles of trail – building 39 cairns\, blazing 20 trees\, and removing 15 logs\, along with brushing 6 drains and tread work\, on Bear Canyon Trail 104.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Come join us as we partner with the Gila Chapter of the NM Back Country Horsemen on a horse-supported backpack project near Glenwood. See below for information from the Gila BCH website: \n“Our work will tie into later Forest Service trail work\, reopening more loops in the Glenwood District. Most of the repairs are from deferred maintenance and post-Whitewater Baldy Fire in 2012. Optional: camping at a nearby campground the night before the project (please bring your own food and water). Camping options include Bighorn Campground just off of 180\, only a few minutes from the meeting place\, or Cosmic Campground north of Alma on 180\, 20-minute drive to meeting place. \nOn Thursday we will meet between 8:00-8:30AM at Glenwood Community Park for introductions\, work objectives\, safety talk and gear check. We will give the packers our food and a bit of our gear\, then carpool to a location near our trailhead. Because the last ¼ mile on the road to the trailhead is in bad condition\, we will park at a small pull-off at the gate and hike to basecamp from there. People with high clearance vehicles are welcome to drive all the way to the trailhead. From the trailhead the hike to basecamp is 4.25 miles. This is a dry camp so water will be packed in. We will have our Seek Outside hot tent with us for the cool mornings and evenings. Day temperatures should be pleasant. \nFood: Gila BCH homemade vacuum sealed meals (breakfasts and dinners) will be available for this project. We can accommodate meat eaters\, vegetarians\, and some gluten free diets. But you can also bring your own breakfasts and dinners if you prefer. Everyone will need to provide their own lunches and snacks. Water: Please bring water for the hike to basecamp. We will provide jugs of water at basecamp. There is no water on the trail where we will be working so bring 3-quart water capacity. We will provide: Tools\, hard hats\, trail and safety training\, project supervision\, and first aid kit with Wilderness First Responder trained personnel.” \nPlease see the BCH website description for a packing list and more information! Sign up below by Sunday\, March 19. \nDifficulty:   \nGroup Size: 12 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign up by clicking below:\nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. SUMMARY:Box Canyon (Socorro BLM) (CANCELLED Agency Review)
DESCRIPTION:From the agency: “Due to on going review of the environmental documentation that authorizes the construction of the Descansos Trail\, the April 15th NMVFO project will be canceled.” Sorry\, folks\, we hope to reschedule this in the future when issues are resolved.\n \nDescription: Join us for a one-day trail building project near the Box (a popular climbing area) near Socorro. The project will advance the construction of the Descansos Trail\, extending from the Gramont Peak Trail to the shrine located at the intersection of the Socorro Gun Range Road and Hwy 60. This will be a multi-use (hike\, bike\, equestrian) trail. The ridge segment of the trail has mild grades extending through grass lands and volcanic rock outcroppings that will be used for the trail tread in key spots. The descent from the ridge traverses through a boulder field and will require significant effort in relocating rocks or filling cavities to generate an easily navigated trail tread. \nParticipants should wear sturdy boots or work shoes (no sandals or soft shoes)\, long pants\, hat\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with water\, snacks\, sack lunch\, sunscreen\, and other personal items. We expect to finish by 4:00 PM\, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if necessary. \nLocation:  Park at the Shrine (Google map). \nGroup Size: 20 (in addition to our partner local trail group\, NMT Bike Club) \nDifficulty: \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign up by clicking below:\nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. SUMMARY:Jerky Mountains Backpack (Gila NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Melissa Green led this project on the northwest side of the Gila Wilderness. The crew made 1 mile of new tread (switchbacks between Turkey Feather Pass and Jerky Mountains)\, removed 277 logs\, constructed 70 trail markers and 10 drains in addition to spot brushing.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Come join us as we partner with the Gila Chapter of the NM Back Country Horsemen on an extended horse-supported backpack project in the Jerky Mountains area of the Gila Wilderness. See below for information from the Gila BCH website: \n“This trail work will connect with other trail work we are doing earlier in the spring. We will also be relogging trails we worked on several years ago. These trails are used by multiple types of trail users and will benefit many. The views are amazing\, and there is mixed conifer by the creeks. While fire has affected this area some\, it is mostly unburned and pristine. The hiker crew will backpack to Turkey Feather Pass with support from a few horse packers. If there is no water nearby we will have water packed in. The hiker crew will work on the Lilley Mountain Trail #164 over the Jerky Mountains while the equine crew works on trails near their (separate) basecamp. Rain is possible. Mornings and evenings may be cool. Days will likely be warm to hot. \n(Optional camping at the Ben Lilley Campground or Willow Creek Campground the night before the project. Please bring your own food and water.) We will meet at the Willow Creek Corrals (**see note about directions below) at 8:00AM on Monday\, May 1 for introductions\, work objectives\, safety talk and gear check. We will give the packers our food and a bit of our gear before our 6.5 mile hike to basecamp. There are options to refill and filter water at mile 3. At basecamp we will drink out of water jugs if there is no water in the meadow. There is no water on the trails where we will be working so please bring 4-quart water capacity. We will provide: Tools\, hard hats\, trail and safety training\, project supervision\, and first aid kit with Wilderness First Responder trained personnel.” \n**Although the map to the meeting location is linked above\, please do not use Google Maps for the final approach to Willow Creek Corrals. SUMMARY:Manzanos West Side (Cibola NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: On Saturday\, ten volunteers worked on lopping and cleared 34 trees from most of the Comanche Trail for 5.5 miles (one-way). On Sunday\, twelve volunteers completed a variety of tasks on Trigo Trail for the first 3 miles that included the removal of 15 trees\, lopping\, some stream work\, and graffiti removal. The project\, based at the old JFK Campground in the Mountainair Ranger District of Cibola NF\, was supported by two skillful cooks and perfect weather. Our volunteer team was more than up to the task of the good amount of hiking that was necessary to “get to the work” and completed the first-ever NMVFO graffiti removal with exceptional results.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: From the Trigo Trailhead (old JFK Campground\, John F Kennedy Campground – Google Maps) we will clear deadfall on Comanche Trail for 4.5 miles. Also\, we will work on Trigo Trail for the first 3 miles including tree removal\, lopping and some graffiti removal. The road to the project is quite rough and requires a high clearance vehicle. We will provide detailed directions to all participants as Google Map is not reliable in the area. We will have access to the old campground (behind a locked gate). The trip from Albuquerque is almost 2 hours\, so camping Friday and Saturday nights will be available\, but you could work any portion of the weekend. Food will be provided for Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning. Bring your own food and water for the trail. \nPets are not allowed on NMVFO projects \nDifficulty:   due to distance \nGroup size: 17 (including 2 cooks) \nDeadline: Sign up by May 1\, 2023 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1. SUMMARY:Valle de Oro Cleanup (NWR)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Twelve NMVFO volunteers improved the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge by clearing debris and removing invasive vegetation (primarily Kochia aka Bassia scoparia) from the area around the Visitor Center and around the trail that surrounds the cattail pond. We filled one dumpster and one trailer with the invasive plants which will be composted. The deep rooted Kochia was difficult to remove since the area has a drip irrigation system that could not be disturbed. Therefore\, the majority of the work was done with small hand tools and hand pulling of the noxious weed. For their perseverance\, all participants were awarded “Weed Warrior” T-shirts courtesy of Valle de Oro.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nProject Description: The Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge. It serves as an oasis for both wildlife and people. Established in 2012\, the refuge is beginning to transition from agriculture fields to a diversity of native habitats and visitor amenities. \nWe will improve the refuge by clearing debris and removing invasive vegetation. We will meet in the Valle de Oro Visitor Center parking lot at 8:00 AM to sign in. Dakota Dominguez\, Valle de Oro Park Ranger\, will present a short talk on the refuge. We will then proceed by car caravan to the work site to review the planned work and conduct a safety briefing. \nVolunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, eye protection\, and work gloves. Long sleeve shirts are recommended. Bring a hat\, sun protection\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, lunch\, and other necessities. We plan to finish work by 4:00 pm. \nThe volunteer group will not exceed 14 participants. The Visitors’ Center restroom facilities will be open. Registrants will be updated by email in the week(s) before the project with the latest information. If you have to cancel on the day of the project\, please text the Project Leader at 505-705-2584. \nDirections: Valle de Oro is located approximately 10 miles south of Albuquerque’s Big I. Coming from the North\, take Interstate 25 South to Rio Bravo (Exit 220). Go West on Rio Bravo\, then South on Broadway for approximately 2.25 miles. Turn West on Desert\, cross the Railrunner Tracks\, then turn South on 2 nd Street. The entrance to Valle de Oro will be on your right about 0.75 miles. At the entrance\, proceed to Visitor Center parking. Please plan to be there a little before 8:00 AM. \nDifficulty: \nTo sign up: Click on the button below and fill out the contact information. If the project is full\, you can email the project leader to be put on a wait list. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1. The hike to camp is approximately 7 miles\, with 3000’ of elevation gain. If you have a backpacking stove and fuel\, please bring those too. A day pack is highly recommended for work days. Long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots\, work gloves and eye protection (sunglasses) are required by the USFS. We assume anyone signing up for this project will have some backpacking experience and will be aware of clothing needs\, including rain gear\, and come prepared for the wide range of temperatures which could occur! Beginning backpackers are welcome\, but must inform the trip leader(s) in advance. Volunteers also have the option of hiking in separately to meet the group for one or more days; please contact the project leader(s) if you intend to do so. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: up to 15 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1.
