SUMMARY:Apache Kid Wilderness 1 (Magdalena RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Join NMVFO on a two-day\, two-night project along the Apache Kid Trail #43. Come prepared to clear numerous downed trees and brush back a four-mile segment of Apache Kid. We will start out Saturday morning from our base camp at Springtime Campground\, working our way up to the San Mateo Peak spur trail. Time permitting\, we will also tackle a one-mile segment of the close by but less-traveled Shipman Trail #50\, part of the Grand Enchantment Trail network\, which needs some love—additional log clearing\, lopping\, and tread improvements. The project will require a strenuous hike in and out each day\, but there will also be plenty of lighter work to keep us busy within a couple of miles of our base camp for those who find the hiking intimidating. NMVFO will provide dinner on Friday night\, breakfast and dinner on Saturday\, and breakfast on Sunday morning. Volunteers should bring packed lunches to eat along the trail on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers are encouraged to join us on Friday night for an early start on Saturday\, but are welcome to join on Saturday morning as schedules allow. \nNMVFO will supply the tools for the project. \nNMVFO will be practicing the then current COVID-19 protocols on this project. Specific details will be provided prior to the start of the project. \nReminder: Pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects. \nPlease sign up by October 8\, 2021. \nMeeting Location: Springtime Campground\, Latitude: 33.57472062\, Longitude: -107.4039569. Springtime Campground is straightforward to navigate to on Forest Road 225. It is reachable in a passenger car\, but a vehicle with AWD/4WD and moderate off-road capability would be most comfortable.

SUMMARY:Apache Kid Wilderness 2 Backpack (Magdalena RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Seven volunteers hiked from Springtime Campground to a base camp near San Mateo Spring for a three day project. We cleared 34 blowdowns from Cowboy Trail\, 61 blowdowns and improved trail visibility on Shipman Trail\, and almost finished lopping Apache Kid Trail from the intersection with Shipman down to the campground.\n \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\n  \n  \nDescription: Join NMVFO on an unsupported backpack project (which means: bring and cook your own food\, help carry in all tools) on the Apache Kid Trail #43 and/or Shipman Trail #50 in the Apache Kid Wilderness. The exact work will depend on the progress of Apache Kid 1 Project the previous week\, and the work of Wilderness Rangers during the summer. This wilderness has had several recent burns\, so a large number of blowdowns need to be cleared. Shipman is disappearing\, and needs treadwork\, cairns\, and lopping to make the trail visible. Expect to hike 5 or more miles each day in challenging steep terrain. A scouting report and photos should give you a better idea of what we will encounter. \nWe expect to begin hiking back to our cars on Sunday\, October 24\, mid-morning. \nMeeting Location: Springtime Campground\, Latitude: 33.57472062\, Longitude: -107.4039569. Springtime Campground is straightforward to navigate to on Forest Road 225. NMVFO/Forest Service will provide the tools and hard hats.\n• Eye protection (sunglasses)\n• A packing list will be provided in an update to this listing. Bring a backpack\, tent\, sleeping bag and sleeping pad\, water bottles\, sufficient meals.  An outfitter will cache a supply of water for us near our campsite. We will supply group water filters just in case\, but you can also bring your own. \nCurrent Covid-19 protocols will be enforced. Details will be provided prior to the start of the project. \nPlease note that pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects. \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at our Volunteer FAQ’s\, or email the project leader. A team of 17 NMVFO Volunteers\, including 14 current and former Board members\, and Valle de Oro staff cleared over 2000 feet of trail by leveling and defining tread\, clearing debris and invasive vegetation. We also cleared an adjoining acequia of debris and vegetation. A great crew with McClouds and rakes made for a great start to the 2022 project season.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: The Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge. It serves as an oasis for both wildlife and people. Established in 2012\, the refuge is beginning to transition from agriculture fields to a diversity of native habitats and visitor amenities. We will improve the North Field Loop Trail by leveling and defining tread\, clearing debris and invasive vegetation. We will also clear an adjoining acequia and install signs as time permits. We will meet in the Valle de Oro Visitor Center parking lot at 8:00 AM to sign in. Dakota Dominguez\, Valle de Oro Park Ranger\, will present a short talk on the refuge. We will then proceed by car caravan to the work site to review the planned work and conduct a safety briefing. \nVolunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, eye protection and work gloves. Long sleeve shirts are recommended. Bring a hat\, sun protection\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, lunch\, and other necessities. SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Twenty-one NMVFO volunteers joined five personnel from the Albuquerque Open Space Division to build several hundred feet of new trail through rugged terrain that required construction of numerous rock walls. When completed\, this trail will replace an existing eroding trail that cuts through an area containing a concentration of Native American cultural artifacts.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: This session will build upon skills introduced at the March 11 class for new volunteers\, but anyone is welcome to sign up for either or both sessions. The field training will take place at a property newly acquired by the Open Space Division which will soon include an education center\, the Tijeras Education Building. Experienced Open Space personnel and NMVFO members will help mentor volunteers as we re-route an existing trail. Expected tasks include building the new trail segment following a better path identified by pin flags and closing off the old section by covering it with branches and any nearby rocks\, transplanting available cactuses\, and scarifying the surface (“tread”) to slow erosion and encourage new growth. Building the new trail may include clearing or trimming existing plants\, reshaping the trail’s surface to improve drainage\, and reinforcing it with rocks as needed. \nVolunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, and bring work gloves\, hat\, sun protection\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, lunch\, and other necessities. We will follow any pandemic protocols for outdoor gatherings in effect in March. Registered volunteers will be provided updates on the project by email. \nDirections:  We will meet by 8:30 AM in the parking lot of the future Tijeras Education Building at 15600 Old Route 66. As shown on this map\, if coming from Albuquerque on I-40\, turn south at the Tramway Blvd exit\, then turn left on Central Ave. and continue driving west for 1.2 miles. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 \nCost: Free! \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Trail Backpack (Gila NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fifteen volunteers and staff from CDTC\, the Gila BCH\, and NMVFO hiked in 3.15 miles to a base camp on this alternate CDT route to lop 1.7 miles of trail\, build 50 cairns\, clear 17 trees\, and improve tread on about 1.3 miles.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: In 2020\, the Tadpole Fire burned 11\,000 acres between Silver City and the Gila Hot Springs\, including areas around Tadpole Ridge\, a popular CDT alternate route along the Sycamore Canyon Trail in the Gila National Forest. As the forest reclaims the damaged area\, washouts have caused erosion issues\, and dead pine needles hide any trace of a trail. NMVFO will partner with the Gila Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen and Continental Divide Trail Coalition on a 4-day backcountry project working along 3.5 miles in Sycamore Canyon and nearby mesas. The work site is located close to Devil’s Garden\, an area known for unique rock formations. Tread work\, brushing\, logging\, and trail marking will improve the trail before the 2022 hiking season begins. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided by the Back Country Horsemen. Volunteers are asked to bring their own lunches. \nVolunteers will arrive the morning of March 18th. Volunteers\, staff\, and partners will meet between 8AM-8:30AM for a gear check and some paperwork. Volunteers and staff will review a map on site then drive 2.75 miles to the trailhead\, and will begin hiking from there. Upon arriving at base camp the group may spread out tent locations and get settled before lunch. Volunteers will work 8 hours on non-hiking days. \nClick here for a detailed project description from the Gila Chapter of the BCH. Note that signing up below negates the necessity of sending an RSVP (signing up automatically sends the RSVP). Signups will close on Saturday\, March 12. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 15 (6 from NMVFO website) \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:San Lorenzo Canyon (BLM Socorro)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fourteen volunteers and one BLM agency rep built 0.55 miles of new trail in San Lorenzo Canyon\, constructed 6 cairns and 9 drainage features\, installed 4 trail markers\, naturalized 4 trail sections\, and lopped a short section of trail.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Join us as we return to the scenic and geologically rich San Lorenzo Canyon near Socorro to put finishing touches on the South Rim Trail we started in November of 2021. We will construct trail as the route descends from the rim back down to the main channel\, allowing for a loop hike alongside the road back to the kiosk. As time allows\, we may work on signage and a side trail alternate. \nDirections: Do not enter “San Lorenzo Canyon” into Google Maps. The driving route inside the canyon changes every year for high water events\, which confuses Google Maps. Go to the signed turn-off for San Lorenzo Canyon at 34.226730\, -106.954976\, Google Maps link. Turn right as the sign indicates\, across the cattle guard\, and the route soon joins the sandy canyon drainage. SUMMARY:Quarai Mission Trail (Salinas Pueblo Missions NM)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Seventeen NMVFO and Friends of the Salinas Pueblo Missions volunteers worked with National Park Service staff to rehabilitate the Spanish Corral Trail. NMVFO crews originally built this one mile loop trail in 1996. This year\, we added wood chips to improve the tread. The trail is classified as “primitive\,” so we did not widen the corridor. The purpose of the chips is to absorb moisture from the local “gumbo” soil to prevent hikers from making multiple paths to avoid muddy sections. While the Project was originally billed as a 1 Pulaski project\, all volunteers were granted 2 Pulaski credit on the basis of “hill climbing with wood-chip-filled buckets.” The Spring weather was great\, and Quarai is a beautiful National Monument with a rich history.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: The Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument  is a complex of three pueblo and Spanish mission sites located near Mountainair\, NM. The Quarai site is located about 8 miles north of Mountainair\, at about 6650 feet. Quarai encompasses the archaeological remains of prehistoric Native American settlements\, historic remains of a pueblo that was abandoned in the 1670s\, the ruins of a 17th-century Spanish mission compound\, and 19th-century Spanish ranching artifacts. For this project\, we will improve the one mile Corral Loop Trail by adding wood chips to the tread\, trimming back brush\, removing one tree\, and improving drainage. We will meet in the Quarai Visitor Center parking lot at 8:30 AM to sign in\, review the planned work\, and conduct a safety briefing. \nVolunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, eye protection\, and work gloves. Long sleeve shirts are required for brushing. Bring a hat\, sun protection\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with water\, snacks\, lunch\, and other necessities. We plan to finish work by 4:00 pm. \nPandemic protocols: Covid-safe practices will apply. All participants will be required to wear masks when working in close proximity to others. The volunteer group will not exceed 20 participants. The Visitors’ Center restroom facilities will be open; masks will be required to enter. Registrants will be updated by email in the week(s) before the project with the latest information. If you are not feeling well on the day of the project\, please text the Project Leader at 505-705-2584. \nDirections: From Albuquerque\, drive east on I-40\, exit at Tijeras (Exit 175). Proceed south on Hwy 337 (old South 14) through Chilili. At the intersection with Hwy 55\, turn west and proceed on Hwy 55 through Tajique\, Torreon and Manzano. Approximately 5 miles south of Manzano\, just as you enter the village of Punta de Agua\, turn west on County Rd B076 and proceed to Quarai Site Visitor Center parking. The estimated driving time from the Big I is approximately 1.5 hours\, so plan accordingly. Please be there a little before 8:30 AM. If coming from the South (Socorro\, etc.) contact the Project Leader for directions as needed. \nTo sign up:  Click on the button below and fill out the contact information. Once the project fills a waitlist will be added. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Mesa View Trail (Sevilleta NWR)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Eighteen NMVFO volunteers joined Jeannine Kimble of the Sevilleta staff to improve the first mile of a rugged trail that leads from the Visitors Center to the crest of the prominent mesa to the west. Traditional trailwork included widening and smoothing the tread as well as improving drainage with waterbars\, drain dips\, berm removal\, and check dams. Other work involved replacing reinforcing and repairing stone and timber stairs on the steepest portions of the trail\, where a tumbleweed-fueled wildfire had burned many of the timbers. The volunteers carried about 30 new timbers up the trail’s steep slopes\, using 17 of them to replace damaged steps and install some new ones. They later carried the damaged and unused timbers back down the trail.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge protects a large expanse of land north of Socorro encompassing a variety of terrain and habitats on both sides of the Rio Grande. This year we will be working on a hiking trail just west of the Visitor Center. It leads up to an extensive mesa with views looking over the refuge – from the Los Pinos Mountains in the east to Ladron Peak on the west. The section of the trail we’ll be maintaining and repairing climbs uphill on loose soil subject to erosion. It includes two stairways (one of them shown in the photo) constructed of timber and stone steps\, some of which need to be replaced. In addition to improving drainage along the trail\, we will be carrying in timbers and gathering local rocks (bringing most of them up steep slopes) to replace damaged steps and shore up others. (Rock slings and strong canvas bags will allow two or more volunteers to share the weight.) Volunteers should wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, and bring work gloves\, hats\, sun protection\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with plenty of water\, snacks\, a light lunch\, and other necessities. We plan to finish work by 3:30 pm if attendance is sufficient. \nPandemic protocols: We will follow whatever rules for outdoor gatherings are in effect by April. Even if the Visitors’ Center (which has been closed to the public during the pandemic) is not yet open\, volunteers can go inside to use the facilities. Registrants will be updated by email in the week(s) before the project with the latest information. \nDirections: The Sevilleta Visitor Center is located 60 miles south of Albuquerque’s Big I on Interstate 25. Take Exit 169 and turn right at the first intersection. As shown on this map\, the Visitor Center is about ¼ mile up this road. We will meet in the parking lot by 8:30 AM to sign in and get oriented on the planned work and related safety precautions. \nTo sign up\, click on the button below and fill out the contact information. One person per signup.

SUMMARY:Osha Trail 1 (Mountainair RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fifteen volunteers removed downfall along the upper\, rerouted section of the Osha Trail to the point that had been cleared by NMVFO from the bottom up during the previous two years. In addition\, all downed trees were removed from the Manzano Crest Trail between Capilla Peak and Osha Peak and trimming was done along this section of the Crest Trail. High winds and cold temperatures were no match for this strong team that was supported by NMVFO cooks with two breakfasts and one dinner. The work will continue in September with the building of new tread to fully rehabilitate the Osha Trail.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Come join us for a weekend in the Manzanos! The work will consist of walking 1.5 miles south on the Manzano Crest Trail from Capilla Peak to reclaim Osha Trail\, which was destroyed by the Trigo Fire. We will be clearing downed trees and lopping. Tools will be provided. \nWe will camp at Capilla Peak Campground\, a primitive campground on the crest of the Manzano Mountains at an elevation of 9\,300 ft. The campground has pit toilets but no water. The road to Capilla Peak is 10 miles long and starts in the Village of Manzano. It is a fairly rough forest road that is safe for a high clearance passenger car but probably not for a trailer. Camping is available for Friday and Saturday nights but volunteers are welcome to arrive on Saturday morning for the 8:30 start (please arrive a little early). The drive from Albuquerque is a little under 2 hours. \nNMVFO will provide breakfast and dinner on Saturday\, and breakfast on Sunday. Please bring your own dinnerware\, your own food and water for Friday night\, and lunch for the trail on Saturday and Sunday. Please consider bringing some extra water for the campsite. Volunteers must wear sturdy boots (preferred) or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, eye protection and work gloves. Long sleeve shirts and long pants are required. Hard hats will be provided. Bring sun protection and apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. \nSign up below by Monday\, April 18. SUMMARY:Cañoncito Trail (Sandia RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: On May 14\, 2022\, eight NMVFO volunteers built a 250-ft spur trail in the Sandia Mountains\, connecting the Cañoncito Trail to Cañoncito Spring. They removed and moved countless logs and other debris to keep horses off a sensitive area near the spring; reinforced the edge of the water where the trail “lands”; and closed off a steep user trail which had led to the spring.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Join us for a day and a half of work near the intersection of the Faulty and Cañoncito trails in the Sandia Mountains. Volunteers will build a spur trail\, redefine existing tread\, create water protection measures\, and build a buck & rail fence to direct traffic and mitigate erosion in the vicinity of Cañoncito Spring. We will camp nearby at the Cole Spring picnic area. \nOn Friday evening we will meet at the Sandia Ranger District (SRD) Visitor Center\, at the north end of the parking lot. From there we’ll caravan to our campsite at Cole Spring. The road to Cole Spring is rough\, and 4WD is best. At the SRD there is a secure place to leave cars if anyone would like to carpool from there. We’ll pass through a locked gate to get to Cole Spring and will not leave the area until the end of the project\, except in case of emergency. \nCamping at Cole Spring should be pleasant\, with picnic tables and shade. Besides tent\, sleeping bag/pad\, headlamp\, etc\, a camp chair and cooler are nice to have. Please bring your own dinnerware and eating utensils. NMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday\, and dinner on Saturday. Volunteers will be responsible for their own lunches and snacks\, as well as dinner on Friday. \nUSFS regulations require that we wear sturdy boots\, long pants and sleeves\, work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses okay) and hard hats when we work. Hard hats and tools provided. Please also bring a day pack for snacks & lunch\, water bottle\, sunblock\, and rain gear. \nYou can sign up below until Monday\, May 9. One person per signup. Hope to see you there! \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 15 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Abo Painting Project (Salinas Pueblo Missions NM)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Seven NMVFO volunteers joined National Park Service staff to refurbish information signs at the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument\, Abo site. The VFO work crew masked\, sanded\, washed\, and spray painted the metal frames for 15 signs located throughout the monument. The NPS staff provided all painting supplies and significant support. New information signs will be installed in the refurbished frames. Three volunteers\, who had not previously participated in a Salinas project\, were presented with Salinas Monument Challenge Coins. Weather was pleasant with some wind that made spray painting a challenge. A resident diamond-back was spotted during the site survey (see picture); fortunately\, no diamond-backs disturbed the actual painting project.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK

SUMMARY:Ghost Lake (Gila NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Over the course of three days\, seven volunteers from Continental Divide Trail Coalition and New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors built ~500 ft of new tread to begin a reroute of a section of the CDT. Despite extremely rocky soil and afternoon thunderstorms which shortened the work days\, the crew had a fun time\, and good progress was made.\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Our partners at Continental Divide Trail Coalition\, CDTC\, are supporting a multi-year project to complete a 9.1 mile reroute of the CDT through the northern Gila National Forest between Five Springs and Ghost Lake. In 2021 youth corps began to make headway on 3 miles of construction\, with a clear need for growing partnership support to bring more capacity to this high priority project. NMVFO will partner with CDTC on one of the project weekends this year\, Saturday Sep 10 thru Tuesday Sep 13. Volunteers will help clear\, repair\, and restore tread from a wildfire that passed through this area\, and help build a new trail that will avoid excessively rocky areas and uphold the scenic beauty of the CDT. \nThis is a car-camping project. We will meet at the Apache Creek Campground on Friday evening\, September 9 (if you plan to arrive Saturday morning\, please inform the project leader). Breakfasts will be provided Sat-Tue\, and dinners will be provided Sat-Mon. Volunteers are asked to bring their own snacks and lunches. Water will be made available\, but please bring extra containers for camping. Required when working with the USFS: work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses okay)\, long pants\, long sleeves\, and boots or sturdy shoes. Tools and hard hats (also required) will be provided. \nNote that CDTC requires all registered volunteers to provide proof of vaccination before attending projects\, with some exceptions. We will adhere to this rule when we partner with them. \nYou can sign up below until Monday September 5. One person per signup. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 12 \nMap: \n \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Juan Tomas (ABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fifteen NMVFO volunteers and two Open Space staff members built 1/3 mile of new trail through the forest in this popular recreation area. The day’s work included clearing and leveling a smooth well-drained tread\, digging and chopping out more than 20 tree stumps plus numerous roots and saplings\, and sawing or lopping branches intruding on the trail. (OS employees had previously laid out the route with pin flags and the felled largest trees with a chain saw.) \n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: (This project has been rescheduled from August 20 because of weather.) Albuquerque’s Open Space Division maintains five areas on the east side of the Sandia and Manzanita Mountains. The largest of these is the Juan Tomas Open Space\, which encompasses 1\,290 acres of primarily piñon-juniper and ponderosa forest growing at elevations up to 7\,760 feet. We will be using a variety of tools to clear vegetation and excavate the forest floor to create about a half mile of new trail that is a part of a larger 1.1 mile trail reroute. Construction of some rock retaining walls may also be required. We will hike in about a mile on mostly level ground to the work site. Participants should wear sturdy boots or work shoes (no sandals or soft shoes)\, long pants\, hats\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather\, especially rain gear. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with water\, snacks\, a light lunch\, sunscreen\, hand sanitizer\, and other personal items. We expect to finish by 3:30 PM\, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if necessary. \nMeeting Place: From Albuquerque\, take the Tijeras exit (#175) off Interstate 40 and drive south on State Highway 337 for 9 miles (passing by Juan Tomas Road). Turn east (left) on Oak Flat Road. Continue for about 3 miles (a half mile beyond a dirt parking lot with a pipe gate). Turn into the gravel parking lot on the left side of the road as shown in this satellite view. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 (if the project fills again the waitlist will be reopened) \nSign up below. One person per signup. \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.
