SUMMARY:Juan Tomas ABQ Open Space
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Seventeen NMVFO volunteers and four City of Albuquerque Open Space Division personnel built over a quarter mile of new trail and closed a slightly longer section of old eroding trail. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nAugust 24 @ 8:30 – 4:00 PM \nDifficulty: 2 Pulaskis Contact Leader: Lawrence (Larry) Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com\, 505-821-7999\, to sign up. \nIn addition to its heavily used recreational areas within Albuquerque\, the City’s Open Space Division also maintains five less-visited public lands east of the Sandia and Manzanita Mountains. See https://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/open-space/lands/east-mountain-open-space. The largest of these is the Juan Tomas Open Space\, which encompasses 1\,290 acres of primarily pinon-juniper forest growing as high as 7\,760 feet. As shown on the lower right side of the following map\, it lies adjacent to the Sandia Ranger District’s extensive multi-use trail network: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd555098.pdf. \nDescription: The goal of our project is to better connect the Juan Tomas Open Space to the Cibola National Forest’s heavily used Oak Flat Group Picnic Complex. We will be using a variety of trail-working tools to clear vegetation\, remove rocks\, and excavate soil to create about half a mile of smooth well-drained trail segments. Participants should wear sturdy boots or work shoes (no sandals or soft shoes)\, long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, hats\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather\, especially rain gear if the Monsoon season is active. Also bring work gloves if you have a pair (otherwise loaners will be available) and a day pack with water\, snacks\, a box lunch\, sunscreen\, and personal items. Depending on turnout\, we may finish earlier than 4:00 pm\, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if necessary. After we finish working\, a VFO member and his wife who live close by have offered to serve some snacks and refreshments to interested volunteers. Additional guidance for new trail workers is available at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq/. \nDirections: To reach the worksite\, take the Tijeras exit from Interstate 40\, drive south on State Highway 337 for 9 miles (passing by Juan Tomas Road). Turn east (left) on Oak Flat Road. Continue east (past the Oak Flat Group Picnic Area) for about 2.2 miles. Turn into the gravel parking lot in front of the gate on the north (left) side of the road\, as shown here: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.998911\,-106.3040672\,116m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

SUMMARY:Datil Well Campground (BLM)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: The NMVFO Datil Well team built about .7 miles of new trail\, assisted the BLM crew on the drag line (about .8 miles) to include some hand tool cleanup of the drag line on Sunday\, and installed a new fire ring. The NMVFO cooks\, Donna and Marie\, did a great job keeping the trail crew well fed. At the end of the project\, Mike Comiskey\, BLM Socorro Representative\, expressed his appreciation for our dedication\, enthusiasm\, and hard work. Thank you all for working on the project. We greatly appreciate your help and camaraderie. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nEnjoy this beautiful and historic gem of recreational land as we build a new trail spur into the southwestern\, unimproved areas of the recreation area. The hike to the farthest point from the campground is about 1.5 miles but will increase as we build! Please sign up by Tuesday\, August 13th so that we can match provisions to participants. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. Datil is 61 miles west of Socorro on US Hwy 60. The campground is ¼ mile south of Datil on Hwy 12. The green NMVFO signs will be deployed early Friday afternoon at both entrances to the campground area. Work will begin Saturday\, August 16th at 8:00 am and Sunday\, August 17th at the same start time\, but we’ll finish up around noon.

SUMMARY:Hyde Memorial State Park
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Fourteen volunteers rerouted two steep and badly eroded sections of the Park’s popular Circle Trail with several hundred feet of new switchbacks and helped the only two members of the Park staff install a new interpretive sign and trail marker. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nCome join us for trail work at Hyde Memorial State Park! Hyde Memorial is the oldest state park in New Mexico\, located at a cool 9000’ elevation in pine and spruce forests. We will be working on a section of the West Circle Trail\, which is heavily used by park visitors. Our work will involve cutting a short re-route up a steep hill\, plus some drainage\, tread work and switch-back tweaking as time allows. We may also include some tree cutting in other areas. There are rustic campsites for interested volunteers on a first come\, first serve basis; space is limited but the park will give us preference if we call ahead. For more details or to sign up\, please contact Jon Blakey at jblakey102@gmail.com by July 11th. You can also sign up on our Meetup site. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Taos Ski Valley Trails (Questa RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Over five days\, ten volunteers removed 9 downed trees\, cleared 17 stream\, and worked on  30+ drainage features spanning 6.75 miles. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nJoin us in the Carson National Forest along Ski Valley Road (Hwy 150) near Taos\, for camping and trail work in the area. Volunteers are welcome to join for as many days as they like (please inform the trip leader of your plans so we can match meals to participants). Sorry\, no pets. \nThere is a lot of deadfall in the area\, and plenty of brush-work needed to clear trail corridors (we’ll use loppers and pruning saws). Trails are also eroded in spots\, so we will work to redefine tread and shore up some steeper sections (likely including a bit of rock work). Some of the work will take place a few miles up the trail\, with significant elevation gain. The four potential trails we’ll work on will be the Yerba\, Manzanita\, Italianos and Gavilan\, in the Questa Ranger District. Tools will be provided. The USFS requires hard hats (provided)\, sturdy boots\, long pants\, work gloves and eye protection (sunglasses). Please also bring a large day pack\, lunch/snacks\, rain gear\, sunblock and plenty of water. There will be water along the trail\, so a small water filter could be useful (but not required). \nCamping and port-a-potties will be available from the evening of June 26th through the morning of July 3rd in a meadow near a historic USFS cabin (map). Green NMVFO signs will point the way to this location. We’ll work from 8:30am-4pm each day\, including hiking time. Breakfast will be provided Fri 28th-Tue 2nd. Dinner will be provided Fri 28th-Mon 1st. \nVolunteers will need to bring their own tent (tiny RV’s okay)\, sleeping bag/pad (and pillow)\, DINNERWARE\, camp chair\, headlamp\, WARM CLOTHING. Camping at 8\,500 feet\, it will be cool! Other recommended items: insect repellent\, in-camp shoes\, extra toilet paper\, a cooler for beverages (adult and other). Taos is approximately 15 miles from our campsite. \nPlease contact Jenny to sign up\, or with questions. It should be a fun\, challenging project\, and a great time of year to camp in the area. Hope you can make it!

If you have a water filter and/or backpacking stove and fuel\, please bring those too. A day pack is highly recommended for work days. Long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots\, work gloves and eye protection (sunglasses) are required by the USFS. We assume anyone signing up for this project will have some backpacking experience and will be aware of clothing needs\, including raingear\, and come prepared for the wide range of temperatures which could occur! Beginning backpackers are welcome\, but must inform the trip leader in advance. The hike to camp is approximately 8 miles\, with 3000 ft. of elevation gain\, and we will divide up the tools (saws and loppers) to carry. A challenging (and fun!) way to give back to the Crest Trail! We will hike in on Friday and hike out on Monday\, with the bulk of the work taking place on Saturday and Sunday (some on Friday too\, but we will take our time hiking in). Volunteers also have the option of hiking in separately to meet the group for one or more days; please let us know if you intend to do so. For more information or to sign up\, contact the project leader.

SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (FWS)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: The originally scheduled project for Saturday February 16 was cancelled during the partial shutdown of the federal government from December 22 –January 25. When a Congressional Continuing Resolution provided 3 weeks of temporary funding\, the Sevilleta staff returned to work on January 28. They and the NMVFO decided to reschedule the project for Saturday February 9 (because this temporary funding would expire on Friday February 15). In less than 2 weeks they graded the restoration area\, drilled about 2\,000 holes\, and prepared at least 1\,000 cuttings of Goodings Willows and Cottonwood trees . \nDespite the short notice\, 16 NMVFO volunteers were able to make it on the rescheduled date. Joining a 6-member Americorps team\, the VFO volunteers finished pole planting more than 700 trees under the direction of Wildlife Biologist Jon Erz. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \nSevilla Update: \nWhen the Sevilleta staff finally got back after the partial federal shutdown was lifted\, they agreed to focus much of their work on preparing for our previously scheduled project. Because temporary funding under current Continuing Resolution expires on the 15th\, the date of the project has to be moved up by a week–from Saturday the 16th to the 9th. \nDifficulty: [1 Pulaski] \nContact: Lawrence (Larry) Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com\, 505-821-7999 \nThe Sevilleta NWR (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/sevilleta/) protects a large area north of Socorro containing a great variety of terrain and vegetation. Photos of last year’s project are available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157663893356497. \nVolunteers for this year’s project are once again invited to help restore some riparian habitat along the Rio Grande in a restoration area that has been cleared of invasive Tamarisk trees. We will be pole-planting willows and/or cottonwoods to create an environment favorable to a variety of native wildlife\, especially the endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher. Refuge staff will have already drilled holes down to the water table with an auger and prepared the cuttings\, so our main job will be inserting these small saplings and back-filling the holes (to include breaking up clods of drying soil). As this task needs to be done in late winter (before the growing season)\, please dress accordingly if the weather is chilly or precipitation is in the forecast. The place where we’ll be working may be muddy\, so wearing sturdy water-resistant boots is advised. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with lunch\, drinks\, and snacks. Extra water will be available at the work site. The work may be completed by early to mid-afternoon depending on attendance. \nVolunteers will need to convene at Sevilleta’s Visitor Center by 8:30 AM for transportation to the work site. It is located 60 miles south of Albuquerque’s “Big-I” on Interstate 25. (https://goo.gl/maps/fKVrKMb3X962) Take Exit 169 and make a sharp right turn at the first intersection. The Visitor Center is about 1/4 of a mile up this road to the west. The project leader plans to arrive early to greet arrivals with some coffee and snacks\, but will try to coordinate carpooling for others who may be interested. (One possible meeting place on the way south would be the parking lot at the Bernalillo County RailRunner Station located on Camino Del Tren\, which branches north off Rio Bravo Blvd. about a mile west of I-25 at Exit 220.) SUMMARY:Ute Lake State Park
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: We removed grass and plants in the trail on Saturday to define the trail\, and later removed sand burrs and burned them at the campfire. Sunday work was cancelled for rain. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nJoin us at Ute Lake State Park! This reservoir on the Canadian River near Logan\, NM is over 13 miles long\, one of the longest lakes in the state. Activities include camping\, fishing\, boating\, hiking and birding. There is a short (1.7mi) hiking trail running from the campground\, with beautiful views of the lake. We will work to mitigate erosion and generally shore up areas in need of attention\, including building rolling dips and possibly some rock work. We plan to work from 9-3 on Sat and finish by noon on Sun. On Fri and Sat free group camping will be available at a site above the lake\, with restrooms and showers nearby. If you prefer not to camp\, lodging is available ¼ mi from our campground and also in Logan\, 5 miles down the road. NMVFO will supply breakfast and dinner on Saturday\, and breakfast on Sunday. Please bring your own camp utensils and dinnerware. \nFor camping you will need your own tent (or RV\, no hookup)\, sleeping pad and sleeping bag\, plus camp chair if desired. Nights will be cold\, so bring warm clothing. Rain is possible. There will be plenty of opportunity for fishing when we finish work each day. Please bring your own lunch for the trail\, plus plenty of water. Sturdy boots\, work gloves\, long pants and eye protection (sunglasses) are mandatory. Sunblock and hat are also recommended. All tools provided. NOTE: Sand burrs (goatheads) are an issue at the park! Short gaiters can be very helpful\, and we highly recommend bringing them for this project. \nHere is a link to directions for our camping/meeting spot. map  Note that the turnoff to this section of the park\, on Loop 540\, is about 3mi past the main entrance to the park (i.e. don’t turn onto State Park Road). \nSignups close Mon\, Oct 1st. SUMMARY:Hermit's Peak (Las Vegas RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Over the weekend of September 22-23\, fourteen volunteers led by Mike Timmer of the NMVFO built 865 feet of new trail. It replaced a badly eroded segment of an old logging road that has long served as part of Santa Fe National Forest Trail 233 leading up to Hermit’s Peak in the Pecos Wilderness. As shown in the photos\, they also built 13 check dams to help control further erosion on the old trail sections that were closed both this year and during last year’s project. The El Porvenir Christian Center provided comfortable camping facilities for Friday and Saturday nights. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nCome join us as we build new section of the trail to Hermit’s Peak in the Las Vegas District of the Santa Fe National Forest! Hermit’s Peak is named for a 19th century religious recluse who lived in a cave on the peak. We’ll be camping near (but not on) Beaver Creek on the outskirts of the El Porvenir Christian Center at a pleasant 7600’ elevation. We’ll be rerouting sections of the trail that have been eroded by heavy use and stormwater runoff and blocking off the old trail section plus installing check dams\, if time allows. This trail ultimately ascends to Hermit’s Peak which is located within the Pecos Wilderness and stands over 10\,000’ elevation\, forming a prominent landmark which can be seen for many miles from the grasslands of eastern New Mexico. The campground is accessible by automobile. Volunteers will need to bring their own camping equipment (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.) as well as a plate\, bowl\, cup and eating utensils. \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. Also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection\, plenty of drinking water and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. Tools will be provided. \nThe sign-up deadline is Tuesday\, September 18.

Potable water and bathrooms are located nearby. NMVFO will provide breakfast Saturday and Sunday\, dinner Saturday night. If you plan to eat with us\, please bring your own camp dinnerware. Dinner on Friday evening and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be on your own. Carpooling is encouraged. Registration for this project is required for planning purposes; please sign up for this project no later than 1:00 PM on Tuesday\, May 29th so that we can match provisions to participants. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to support restricted diets. \nVolunteers need to bring their own camping equipment and should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes) and work gloves. They should also bring sunscreen\, a hat\, rain protection (just in case)\, daypack\, water bottles/packs\, and snacks to get you from meal-to-meal. A camp chair would also be a good idea to bring. Tools will be provided. Just as a reminder\, dogs are not allowed on projects. \nDirections to the hatchery:\nFrom Mora\, drive north on NM 434 approximately 1.5 miles\, then turn left into the Hatchery entrance.

SUMMARY:San Pedro Parks Wilderness (Cuba RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULT: Five volunteers renewed 3.5 miles of trail\, removing 27 deadfalls. \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nJoin us as we help clear and restore a section of this trail located on the south end of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. This trail is one of the longest in the Parks\, but it is also one of the least used. It needs a lot of TLC to get it back in shape. This is an unsupported backpack project\, which means that you will be expected to carry in everything you need for four days at basecamp. You will also be expected to carry in a (provided) tool which we will use for the project. Come prepared to do your own cooking and filter your own water. We will focus on clearing the trail of deadfall\, but may also do tread work depending on time. We will hike 2.5 miles in to an area where we will have access to water\, and then begin working back to the TH\, spending all three nights in the same location and hiking out the last day. Carpooling options available. \nThere is a 10 person limit and you must be a US Citizen to participate. Therefore\, you MUST pre-register with the project leader\, Bill Velasquez\, nmvfo@live.com or 505-292-6030. If you are not pre-registered\, you will be turned away at the trailhead. \n

We will work all day Saturday\, and half a day on Sunday. Project limited to 12 volunteers. \nCamping will be available Friday\, May 11th through Sunday\, May 13th. Potable water and portable bathrooms are located nearby. The campsite is located approximately three miles east of Taos\, at the hotshot base helipad area\, so all town amenities will be available. NMVFO will provide breakfast Saturday and Sunday\, dinner Saturday night. If you plan to eat with us\, please bring your own camp dinnerware. Dinner on Friday evening (though snacks may be available) and lunch on Saturday and Sunday will be on your own. Carpooling is encouraged. SUMMARY:St. Peter's Dome (Jemez RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Nineteen volunteers organized by the NMVFO repaired and improved 2.3 miles of the St Peters Dome Trail across drought-stricken Sanchez Canyon and up the ridge on the other side. Their work included bucking a half dozen fallen tree trunks blocking the trail (using crosscut and hand saws within the Dome Wilderness)\, widening the tread (to include carving a new “bench” in sections where loose pumice had overwhelmed the trail)\, removing weeds and trimming brush intruding on the trail\, improving drainage features\, and building cairns to mark the obscured trail up past its junction with the Turkey Springs Trail.  \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nThe NMVFO has helped maintain this remote and rugged trail for many years\, most recently in 2016\, but the trail continues to suffer after-effects from the infamous Las Conchas wildfire of 2011\, especially erosion and fallen timbers. Under the guidance of Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District\, we will clear brush and any deadfall blocking the trail corridor\, shore up washed out sections with rocks\, and improve the trail’s tread by out-sloping\, cleaning sediment\, and excavating other drainage features as needed. We will work from the south trailhead into the Dome Wilderness\, through cliff-lined Sanchez Canyon and possibly up the escarpment beyond. The scenic vistas are unobstructed\, but shade will be scarce and hiking on segments with steep grades and switchbacks somewhat strenuous. USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy (and comfortable) boots\, and work gloves. Also bring a day pack\, hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and—if precipitation is in the forecast—a rain jacket or poncho. For additional guidance\, please consult http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. (Because of blowing dust\, contact lenses may be uncomfortable if strong winds are predicted.) In addition to carrying a tool\, you will need to pack in your own lunch and plenty of water. Extra bottled water and other drinks will be available from a cooler at the trailhead. \nOur meeting place will be at the Pueblo de Cochiti Convenience Store\, 1405 Cochiti Highway (NM 22). See https://www.google.com/maps/@35.6473593\,-106.3291461\,16.25z?hl=en or geo-location 35°38’54.4″N\, 106°19’53.6″W. This is a relatively short commute from either Albuquerque or Santa Fe. Take I-25 to Exit 264 at the bottom of La Bajada Hill\, then west on NM 16 and right on NM 22 past the massive Cochiti Lake Dam and up the hill to the Convenience Store/Gasoline Station on the right. Park in the gravel lot on the left of the store\, which has coffee\, pastries and other snacks\, as well as restrooms. Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM\, when we will carpool in high-clearance vehicles to the trailhead\, which is a few miles up Forest Road 289. (The gate for FR 289 is on the right side of NM 22 about 3/4 mile past the Cochiti Golf Course.) For anyone who would like to stay nearby overnight\, the Corps of Engineers operates two campgrounds at Cochiti Lake (minimum fee: $5.00).

SUMMARY:Trout Creek (Glenwood RD)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Six volunteers renewed 1.25 miles of trail in the Gila. \n\nJoin us as we return to the northwestern part of the Gila. Last year we improved the Airstrip Mesa Trail and will be working on the nearby Trout Creek Trail to create a loop. We will be doing tread restoration and construction. We’ll work all day Friday and Saturday and half a day on Sunday. \nWe will be camping near the small town of Luna in the same location as last year under the cover of ponderosa pines with a nearby creek. There’s plenty of space to pitch tents or sleep in a vehicle. VFO will be supplying Friday\, Saturday and Sunday breakfasts\, and Friday and Saturday dinners. Volunteers will be responsible for their own lunches\, which we’ll eat on the trail\, plus snacks and beverages\, adult or otherwise. \nMost people will arrive on Thursday evening\, but if you have constraints\, arriving early on Friday is possible. This project does have a maximum of 12 volunteers. \nTo sign-up or request more information contact Jim Scanlon at scanlon.jim@gmail.com or call 505-385-0517.

SUMMARY:Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (FWS)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Thirty(!) volunteers participated in the restoration project. \n\n\nValle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge (VODNWR)\, the Southwest’s first urban refuge will serve as an urban oasis for both wildlife and people on 570 acres of a former dairy farm just five miles south of downtown Albuquerque on the Rio Grande. The refuge has little infrastructure and the beginnings of a trail system for us to maintain\, therefore we’re a big part of whatever it will become! This year we’ll be expanding and improving what exists while laying the foundation for the future.\n\nThere has been a change in scope: this year we’ll be assisting the refuge with native species restoration by gathering seeds. We will also be doing some clean up in another section of the refuge. We won’t be the only volunteer group in attendance; we’ll be accompanied by a group of Girl Scout Volunteers. We will meet at the refuge at 8 am. This project has a 23 person limit so if you have to cancel\, please let me know asap. \n\n\n\nVolunteers should wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy boots (absolutely no sandals or tennis/athletic shoes)\, work gloves; helmets and eye protection are highly recommended. Also\, bring sun and rain protection (just in case)\, plenty of drinking water and snacks. Registration for this project is required for planning purposes; please sign up through the project leader (info below) no later than 12:00 PM on Wednesday\, April 4th. \nIf this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq or email or call the project leaders Erin\, (406) 781-1666 & John\, (505) 999-9182 Salinas\, egaberla@gmail.com.
