SUMMARY:South Sandia Peak Backpack (Cibola NF)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: 12 NMVFO volunteers brushed back ~2.25 miles of the South Crest Trail.\n \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\n  \nDescription: Join us for a rare opportunity to camp off the Crest Trail near South Sandia Peak as we work to clear the trail corridor from overgrowth and deadfall. The hike to camp is approximately 7 miles\, with 3000’ of elevation gain. We will hike in on Friday morning and hike out on Sunday\, with the bulk of the work taking place on Saturday (some on Friday and Sunday too\, but we will take our time hiking in and out). The Back Country Horsemen will support us by transporting tools and water to base camp. \nVolunteers will need to bring their own breakfasts\, lunches\, dinners\, and snacks\, and their own backpack and camping gear (including tent\, sleeping bag/pad\, water containers\, spoon\, coffee mug\, headlamp\, t.p.\, trowel\, etc.). If you have a backpacking stove and fuel\, please bring those too. A day pack is highly recommended for work days. Long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots\, work gloves and eye protection (sunglasses) are required by the USFS. We assume anyone signing up for this project will have some backpacking experience and will be aware of clothing needs\, including rain gear\, and come prepared for the wide range of temperatures which could occur! Beginning backpackers are welcome\, but must inform the trip leader(s) in advance. Volunteers also have the option of hiking in separately to meet the group for one or more days; please contact the project leader(s) if you intend to do so. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: up to 15 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1. We will begin work 9AM Saturday morning from our group campsite\, but you are welcome to join us anytime Friday after 2PM for camping. Our adopted section takes us roughly two miles south along the Rio Santa Barbara from the campground. We’ll remove downed trees\, brush back encroaching vegetation and\, if time remains\, address erosion and drainage issues along the trail. Tools and hard hats will be provided. Certified crosscut sawyers are especially invited to join us\, to deal with several 2-foot diameter logs. \nRequired gear: sturdy boots\, work gloves\, long sleeves\, long pants\, eye protection (sunglasses okay). Please also bring a day pack\, snacks\, trail lunch\, sunblock\, rain gear\, and plenty of water for each work day.  We’ll plan for a long day on Saturday\, ending at around 4:00. On Sunday we’ll plan to be heading out by 2PM. \nFor camping\, feel free to bring a cooler for beverages (adult or other). A camp chair is also a good idea. Nights could be chilly and rain is possible\, so come prepared! \nThe Santa Barbara Campground has pit toilets. It’s a nice campground\, and our adopted section of trail is very pleasant\, in sight of the Rio Santa Barbara for most of its length. Hope to see you there! \nParking is limited to about 8 vehicles at our group site\, so ride-sharing is strongly encouraged. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: up to 15\, no more than 8 vehicles \nSign up below by Monday\, June 12. \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1.
