SUMMARY:Bear\, Allie & Woodhaul Backpack (Gila NF) CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This project is cancelled due to severe weather. \n \nDescription: Come join us as we partner with the Gila Chapter of the NM Back Country Horsemen on a horse-supported backpack project near Silver City. See below for information from the Gila BCH website: \n“These trails are close to Silver City and Mimbres. Our overall goal is reopening the Allie/Bear Canyon/Woodhaul Loop\, which has interesting rock formations\, often flowing water and spots of mixed conifer. Our basecamp will be determined by road conditions and weather. We have 2 camp options\, one at a lower elevation and one at a higher elevation. The hike to basecamp could be up to 6.5 miles. We also have 3 options to access the project. These will be determined closer to the time of the project based on current road conditions. We will have our Seek Outside hot tent with us for the cool mornings and evenings. Days will likely be warm. We will meet between 8:00-8:30AM on Thursday\, March 30 (location TBD) for introductions\, work objectives\, safety talk and gear check. We will give the packers our food and a bit of our gear before hiking to basecamp. \nFood: Gila BCH homemade vacuum sealed meals (breakfasts and dinners) will be available for this project. We can accommodate meat eaters\, vegetarians\, and some gluten free diets. But you can also bring your own breakfasts and dinners if you prefer. Everyone will need to provide their own lunches and snacks. Water: Please bring water for the hike to basecamp. Water will be filtered from the creek at basecamp. Please bring 3-quart water capacity since we will not always have water where we are working. We will provide: Tools\, hard hats\, trail and safety training\, project supervision\, and first aid kit with Wilderness First Responder trained personnel.” \nPlease see the BCH website description for a packing list and more information! Sign up below by Tuesday\, March 21. \nDifficulty:   \nGroup Size: 10 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign up by clicking below:\nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. If you would like to sign up additional volunteers please submit multiple signups.

SUMMARY:Box Canyon (Socorro BLM) (CANCELLED Agency Review)
DESCRIPTION:From the agency: “Due to on going review of the environmental documentation that authorizes the construction of the Descansos Trail\, the April 15th NMVFO project will be canceled.” Sorry\, folks\, we hope to reschedule this in the future when issues are resolved.\n \nDescription: Join us for a one-day trail building project near the Box (a popular climbing area) near Socorro. The project will advance the construction of the Descansos Trail\, extending from the Gramont Peak Trail to the shrine located at the intersection of the Socorro Gun Range Road and Hwy 60. This will be a multi-use (hike\, bike\, equestrian) trail. The ridge segment of the trail has mild grades extending through grass lands and volcanic rock outcroppings that will be used for the trail tread in key spots. The descent from the ridge traverses through a boulder field and will require significant effort in relocating rocks or filling cavities to generate an easily navigated trail tread. \nParticipants should wear sturdy boots or work shoes (no sandals or soft shoes)\, long pants\, hat\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with water\, snacks\, sack lunch\, sunscreen\, and other personal items. We expect to finish by 4:00 PM\, but volunteers are welcome to leave earlier if necessary. \nLocation:  Park at the Shrine (Google map). \nGroup Size: 20 (in addition to our partner local trail group\, NMT Bike Club) \nDifficulty: \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign up by clicking below:\nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. If you would like to sign up additional volunteers please submit multiple signups.
