SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Training project conducted on Albuquerque Open Space land in the Tijeras Canyon Biozone just east of the city. Experienced Open Space personnel and the NMVFO project leaders mentored volunteers to build a new trail section and close an old one. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\n  \nThis session will build upon skills introduced to new volunteers at an indoor class on March 14\, but anyone is welcome to sign up for either or both sessions. For those who miss last week’s class\, we recommend you review its two PowerPoint presentations at the top of the following webpage: https://nmvfo.org/volunteer/resources/. \nDescription: This training project will be conducted on Albuquerque Open Space land in the Tijeras Canyon Biozone just east of the city. Experienced Open Space personnel and the NMVFO project leaders will help mentor volunteers as we build a new trail section and close an old one. The trail’s new route will be marked with pin flags that carefully follow the terrain to permit proper drainage. Any large trees in the way will have already been felled with a chainsaw\, but we will use hand tools to remove stumps\, smaller trees\, brush\, and intruding branches. We will also reshape and smooth the tread\, digging out rocks and roots\, and build rock walls as needed to buttress the trail along steep slopes or at drainage crossings. For closing the old trail segment\, we will scarify the tread and scatter foliage to limit erosion and block its entrances with rocks\, branches\, and replanted cactuses where available. \nPreparations: Wear long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots or work shoes\, eye protection (such as sun glasses)\, caps or hats\, and outer layers appropriate for the weather forecast. Bring work gloves if you have them (but extras will be available to borrow) and a daypack with water\, a light lunch and/or snacks\, and sunscreen. An email update will be sent out during the week before the project. Please sign up no later than March 19. \nDirections: The Tijeras Biozone facilities are located at 15600 Central Ave SE as shown on this map. If coming from Albuquerque on I-40\, turn south on Tramway Blvd (Exit 167)\, then turn left on Central Ave. and continue east on Old Route 66 (NM 333) for 1.2 miles to the parking lot. \nDifficulty: \nSign up by clicking the button below. SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Classroom (CABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Nineteen NMVFO volunteers joined four members of Albuquerque Open Space Division staff for a class at the Holiday Park Community Center\, featuring PowerPoint presentations on how to build and maintain trails. They then went for some practice supervised by Open Space personnel at the Tijeras Canyon Biozone. After hiking in for about a mile\, they broke into groups and improved some existing trails by excavating drain dips to control erosion\, building a rock wall to hold up a collapsing section of trail tread\, erecting some signage\, and closing off entry to an old deteriorating trail by transplanting cholla and prickly pear cactus and setting out other barriers. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\n  \nDescription: Learn the fundamentals of building and maintaining trails with Larry\, and Jim Sattler\, the Deputy Superintendent of Albuquerque’s Open Space Division. This class is especially designed for beginners\, although anyone who would like a skills refresher will be welcome. To follow-up on this introduction\, a full-day field training project will be held one week later on Saturday\, March 21. \nIndoor Class. The workshop will begin with an indoor class at the Holiday Park Community Center\, 11710 Comanche Road NE (just south of Tramway Blvd). Larry will narrate NMVFO PowerPoint presentations that show the challenges and techniques of building and maintaining trails in terrain across New Mexico. Jim will present some background on the Tijeras Canyon Biozone Open Space and use a whiteboard to illustrate the specific trail problems to be dealt with during the outdoor session. You will also receive some handouts about doing trail work. \nOutdoor Practice. After the classroom session\, we will drive east to Tramway Blvd\, south to Central Ave.\, and left for about a mile on Old Route 66 (NM 333) to the Tijeras Biozone Open Space at 15600 Central Ave SE. We will meet in front of the old building located there. Jim will then demonstrate how to safely use the tools that we will carry farther into the Open Space to do some maintenance on an existing trail and (time permitting) build a short new section of trail. \nPreparations: Wear long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots or work shoes\, eye protection (glasses or sun glasses)\, caps or hats\, and outer layers appropriate for the weather forecast. Bring work gloves if you have them (extras will be available to borrow) and a daypack with water\, snacks\, and sunscreen. An email update will be sent out during the week before the project. DESCRIPTION:Description: The City of Albuquerque will be hosting New Mexico’s first major Earth Day Festival on Sunday\, April 21 (which will be covered in a separate NMVFO project description on that date).  For an overview of all the planned activities and participants\, you can visit the festival’s website: https://earthdayfestivalnm.com/.   It includes a section describing the various volunteer opportunities in detail at this link.  To help recruit and familiarize volunteers in preparation for the festival\, its organizers are hosting this orientation and training program on the afternoon of March 30.  Attending this preliminary meeting will be helpful but is not a prerequisite to volunteer for the festival\, which can be done up until mid-April. \nPutting on this event will require a significant number of volunteers to perform a variety of tasks (known as volunteer opportunities) such as directing traffic and parking\, checking in vendors\, helping set up tables\, booths\, barricades\, recycle bins\, and other amenities\, greeting and assisting visitors\, distributing programs\, answering questions\, and cleaning up at the end of the festival.   It is hoped that NMVFO can provide a good number of these volunteers. Volunteers will register with the One Albuquerque volunteer network to choose and sign up for specific jobs and shifts on April 21.  These are listed and described in this section about Earth Day volunteer opportunities.  Experienced NMVFO project leaders are encouraged to sign up as volunteer crew chiefs. \nFor volunteer orientation and training\, we will meet at Balloon Fiesta Park’s Sid Cutter Pilots’ Pavilion\, which is located at the southeast corner of the balloon launching field as shown on this map.   Using the south entrance to the park\, take Alameda Avenue to Balloon Museum Drive\, go north for about a mile past the Balloon Museum to where Balloon Museum Drive makes a hard left turn\, and continue down a short distance to the Sid Cutter Pavilion (shown in the above photo) and park nearby. \nThose attending must sign up on the button below for NMVFO to have a record of attendance and record volunteer hours. \nDifficulty:   \nGroup Size:  Unlimited \nCost: Free! \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1. If you would like to sign up additional volunteers please submit multiple signups.

SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space)
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Sixteen NMVFO volunteers and five personnel from the Open Space Division completed a new trail (started a week earlier after the Trail Workshop’s classroom session) that now goes uphill for more than 1\,000 feet from the Tijeras Creek Trail to intersect with an existing trail. As shown in many of the photos\, the Field Training Project including moving and working with heavy rocks to buttress more than sixty feet of the new trail along three sharply out-sloped sections. The group also closed and did erosion-control work on a steep user-created trail.\n \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n	\n	Show More\n\n\n\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nThis session will build upon skills introduced to new volunteers at the March 16 class\, but anyone is welcome to sign up.  For more helpful information about doing trail work with NMVFO\, go to this link. \nDescription:  This project will take place on Albuquerque Open Space land in the recently expanded Tijeras Canyon Biozone just east of the city.  Experienced Open Space personnel and NMVFO members will help mentor volunteers as we build a new trail section.  Its carefully planned path will be marked with pin flags that follow the terrain to permit adequate tread width and proper drainage.  Any large trees in the way will have already been removed with a chainsaw\, but we will use hand tools to take out stumps and smaller plants and trim back intruding branches.  We will reshape and smooth the tread\, digging up rocks and roots as needed\, and possibly build rock walls to buttress the trail along steep slopes and at drainage crossings.  If closing an old trail segment\, we will scarify the tread and scatter foliage to limit erosion and block entrances with rocks\, branches\, and replanted cactuses where available. \nPreparations: Wear long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots or work shoes\, eye protection (glasses or sun glasses)\, caps or hats\, and outer layers appropriate for the weather forecast. Bring work gloves if you have them (but extras will be available) and a daypack with water\, light lunch and/or snacks\, and sunscreen.  An email update will be sent out during the week before the project.  Please sign up no later than March 21. \nDirections:  The Tijeras Biozone Education Center is located at 15600 Central Ave SE as shown on this map.  If coming from Albuquerque on I-40\, turn south at Tramway Blvd (Exit167)\, then turn left on Central Ave. and continue east on Old Route 66 for 1.2 miles to the parking lot. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 25 \nCost:  Free! \nIf the project is full\, please email the project leader to be put on a waitlist. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.\nOn the signup form please leave the "Number of Volunteers" at 1. SUMMARY:Sawyer Class
DESCRIPTION:RESULTS: Six volunteers earned their Crosscut Sawyer Certification during a one-day class taught by Jennifer Sublett\, USFS\, at the Panchuela Campground\n \nFlickr API error: Invalid API Key (Key has invalid format)\nPHOTO ALBUM LINK \n\nDescription: Earn your USFS Crosscut Sawyer Certification at this all-day class. Sawyer certification is recommended for frequent NMVFO volunteers who desire to advance their trail maintenance skills. This class is for those who want to become active sawyers\, who really intend to use these new skills on trail projects.   You do not need to be certified in First Aid/CPR\, and Blood Borne Pathogens to take the crosscut saw class\, but will need them to become certified Forest Service sawyers. The class is taught by Jennifer Sublett\, USFS. \nWhat is Sawyer Certification? “The USFS requires a sawyer\, the primary operator of a crosscut saw or chainsaw\, to be trained\, evaluated\, and certified through a training program that meets the intent of FSM 2358.03 Policy. Sawyers must have a current National Sawyer Certification Card and meet any other specified qualifications to perform assigned saw work\, including currency in first aid CPR training when engaged in sawing activities. The National Sawyer Certification Card is issued with a three-year expiration date\, which can be subject to review any time prior to expiration.” \nLearn about: binding\, proper use of PPE\, bucking\, risk assessment\, danger trees\, underbucking\, hung trees\, use of wedges\, escape routes\, snags\, widow makers\, and so much more… \nA volunteer does not need sawyer certification when using our smaller folding saws to cut downfalls\, but the concepts learned in this class will also help users of smaller saws become safer and more effective. For larger downfalls\, where a 2-person or 1-person crosscut saw is used\, at least one operator must be sawyer certified. \nMeet at: Panchuela Admin Site. Coordinates 35.829569N  105.663997W. Travel to Panchuela Campsite near the Pecos Wilderness\, and pass beyond the gate near the camp host site to the Admin Site\, following the NMVFO green signs. You do not need a high-clearance vehicle on Panchuela Road– it is paved all the way\, though the roadway narrows to one lane with turn-offs. \nBring: Sack lunch\, snacks. Wear long pants\, long sleeve shirt\, boots\, gloves\, and eye protection\, as on a trail project. Bring your hard hat if you have one\, otherwise NMVFO will provide one. \nDifficulty: 2 Pulaskis (moderately strenuous)\n \nGroup Size: Up to 6\n \nPlease sign up below. Closing date for sign-ups is Wednesday September 30th\, 2020. \n<< THE CLASS IS NOW FULL. IF YOU SIGN UP\, YOU WILL BE PUT ON A WAIT-LIST FOR THE NEXT CLASS\, WHICH JENNIFER IS WILLING TO SCHEDULE SOON\, DEPENDING ON INTEREST >> \nSign Up
