DESCRIPTION:Description: NMVFO is partnering with Heart of the Gila to work along the Hillsboro Bypass Trail 412 and the Black Range Crest Trail 79 in the Black Range of the Gila National Forest\, mostly tread work and brushing. We will meet at the Emory Pass trailhead (8200’) and backpack in to set up basecamp on top of Hillsboro Peak (10\,000’). There we will have use of a cabin\, a cistern for water\, and an outhouse. Volunteers will have the option of sleeping in the cabin or setting up tents nearby. There is a lookout tower near the cabin\, which provides stunning views. There is mixed conifer forest on the peak\, despite the 2013 Silver Fire which destroyed most of the conifers in the high country nearby.\nTools\, group food and kitchen items will be packed in by livestock. Volunteers will carry their own camping gear and personal items\, including tent (if bringing)\, sleeping bag and sleeping pad. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided; volunteers are to supply their own lunches and snacks. DESCRIPTION:Description: Please sign up below. Join us for a day and a half of work near the intersection of the Faulty and Cañoncito trails in the Sandia Mountains. Volunteers will build a spur trail\, redefine existing tread\, create water protection measures\, and build a buck & rail fence to direct traffic and mitigate erosion in the vicinity of Cañoncito Spring. We will camp nearby at the Cole Spring picnic area. Read on for details…\nOn Friday evening we will meet at the Sandia Ranger District (SRD) Visitor Center\, at the north end of the parking lot. From there we’ll caravan to our campsite at Cole Spring. The road to Cole Spring is rough\, and 4WD is best. The Forest Service would prefer that we use as few vehicles as possible\, so carpooling is encouraged. There is a secure (fenced) area at the SRD to leave cars behind. We pass through a locked gate to get to Cole Spring and will not leave the area until the end of the project\, except in case of emergency.\nCamping at Cole Spring should be pleasant\, with picnic tables and shade. Nights could be cold\, so pack accordingly! Besides tent\, sleeping bag/pad\, headlamp\, etc\, a camp chair and cooler are nice to have. Please bring your own dinnerware and eating utensils. NMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday\, and dinner on Saturday. Volunteers will be responsible for their own lunches and snacks\, as well as dinner on Friday.\nUSFS regulations require that we wear sturdy boots\, long pants and sleeves\, work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses okay) and hard hats when we work. Please click on the CDTC Volunteer Page link below to fill out the form and be added to the waitlist.\nDescription: NMVFO will partner with the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) and Heart of the Gila on a backcountry trail maintenance project on the middle fork of the Gila River. We will re-establish tread\, build cairns and clear corridor along this highly used alternate route of the Continental Divide Trail. The project will take place in a backcountry setting where crew leaders will set up a latrine and filter water daily from the Gila River. The hike to basecamp is approximately 10 miles; each day we will work north or south along the trail from there. The first and last days will be hiking days bookending the trail work\, which will include a half day of rest in the middle of the project.\nThe Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico\, Gila Chapter\, will provide horse support. All tools\, PPE and meals will be provided. It is recommended to bring extra snacks. You will need to provide your own pack\, tent and sleeping bag/pad. There are over 21\,000 petroglyphs at this site near the base of the Sacramento Mountains in southeastern New Mexico near Carrizozo. Volunteers will be moving gravel to cover the old eroded trail very close to the campground. DESCRIPTION:Description: Please consider joining us on Saturday\, April 11th for a one day project at Guadalupe Ruin. The work site is approximately a 2-hour drive from Albuquerque\, and we need to be at the site no later than 9 am. More information about the area can be found at this link. Guadalupe Ruin\, the easternmost Chacoan Outlier\, is a single-story masonry pueblo situated on an isolated sandstone mesa rising nearly 200 feet above the valley floor. The top of the mesa is isolated by sheer walls on all sides\, with access to the top restricted to a narrow trail. We’ll be building block stairs and doing some trail reconstruction. The existing trail is approximately 1/8-1/4 mile long from the parking area to the ruins.\nThere is the possibility of arriving on Friday evening to camp the day before the project. SUMMARY:Perea Nature Area (BLM Rio Puerco) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Description: The Perea Nature Trail makes a one-mile loop through a riparian area adjacent to the normally dry Rio Salado\, with views of the southernmost cliffs of the Jemez Mountain Range. Located on level terrain and constructed with a gravel surface\, the trail crosses the old riverbed on wooden bridges and takes visitors past bird-viewing stops and benches. For an informative brochure\, go to: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/Brochure%20Perea%20Nature%20Trail_2020_508.pdf\nVolunteers will be improving the condition of parts of the trail by shoring up eroding segments of the tread with concrete pavers and perhaps landscaping timbers\, trimming back overgrown vegetation\, and removing bunch grasses and noxious weeds from the tread and alongside the trail. We may also renovate a bird-viewing shelter. Phyllis Martinez (co-leader)\, a recently retired USFS trail working expert\, will be supervising the work. Volunteers are advised to wear sturdy boots or shoes\, work gloves\, and dress in layers based on the latest weather forecast. Also bring a day pack with a couple liters of water\, snacks\, food for lunch\, and personal items. Depending on attendance\, we may finish work by mid-afternoon\, but volunteers may leave earlier if need be. DESCRIPTION:May 11 @ 9:00 AM –May 12 @ 1:00 PM \nDifficulty: 2 Pulaskis \nContact Leader: Lawrence (Larry) Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com \, 505-821-7999\, to sign up. \nDescription: After having to cancel a project on the other end of the St Peters Dome Trail (#118) in March because of flooding along Forest Road 289\, we will be working in from its northern trailhead. For some photos of our last project there in 2013\, go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157633694712112/with/8832524304/ The trail continues to suffer erosion and deadfall as a result of the Las Conchas Fire of 2011. This project will be supervised by Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District\, one of the U.S. Forest Service’s acknowledged trail experts. Our work will include restoring the trail’s tread by clearing grass and other vegetation from the trail corridor\, removing rocks and building cairns and check dams where needed\, removing any tree trunks blocking the trail\, and improving drainage by cleaning sediment from old water bars\, making rolling dips where appropriate\, and out-sloping the tread along hillsides. Although there will be little or no shade\, the scenic views will be unobstructed. If lucky we may even see some of the Bighorn Sheep recently reintroduced in nearby Cochiti Canyon. USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, boots (no soft shoes or sandals)\, and work gloves. Please also bring a day pack with plenty of water\, some of your favorite snacks\, a rain jacket or poncho if rain is in the forecast\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses. Camping will be available on Friday and Saturday nights in a grassy meadow known as “Graduation Flats\,” where there is lots of space for tents and a parking lot for vehicles and RVs. The Jemez Ranger District will provide a porta-potty\, water\, and possibly some wood for a campfire. The VFO will provide dinner on Saturday evening and breakfasts\, Saturday and Sunday morning\, and sandwich fixings and fruit for lunch. DESCRIPTION:This project has been cancelled due to impassable roads. \nDifficulty: 3 Pulaskis \nContact: Project Leader Larry Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com (505-821-7999) to sign up. \nThe NMVFO has helped maintain and repair this remote and rugged trail for many years\, especially after the infamous Las Conchas wildfire of 2011. Photos of last year’s work are available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157668721116028.    This year we will hike in 2.5 miles through cliff-lined Sanchez Canyon and up past last year’s work to begin restoring the central portion of the trail—hopefully as far as Picacho Peak.  The scenic vistas are unobstructed\, and if we’re lucky we may see one of the Bighorn Sheep recently reintroduced in adjacent Cochiti Canyon.  Shade will be scarce\, and hiking up trail segments with steep grades and switchbacks will be fairly strenuous.  Once reaching the unrepaired portion of the trail\, we will clear vegetation and any deadfall blocking the trail corridor\, shore up washed out sections with rocks\, and improve the trail by removing bunch grass\, out-sloping the tread along hillsides\, cleaning sediment from old water bars\, building cairns\, and excavating other drainage features as needed.  USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots\, and work gloves.  In addition to carrying a tool\, you will need to pack in your own lunch and plenty of water. So bring a day pack\, hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and—if precipitation is in the forecast—a rain jacket or poncho.  For additional guidance\, consult http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. Extra bottled water and other drinks will be available from a cooler at the trailhead. \nOur meeting place will be at the Pueblo de Cochiti Convenience Store\, 1405 Cochiti Highway (NM 22). Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM\, when we will carpool in high-clearance vehicles to the trailhead\, which is a few miles up Forest Road 289. (The gate to FR 289 is on the right side of NM 22 about 3/4 mile past the Cochiti Golf Course.)  For anyone who would like to stay nearby overnight\, the Corps of Engineers operates two campgrounds at Cochiti Lake (minimum fee: $5.00). \n

SUMMARY:Skyline Backpack (Santa Fe NF)
DESCRIPTION:**This project will only run if the Santa Fe National Forest reopens by June 20th (Stage III fire restrictions)**  Join us as we repair a very scenic trail high up in the Pecos Wilderness! We will make our basecamp at the meadows of Puerto Nambe and work to repair the Skyline Trail as it climbs from the meadows to a saddle on the side of Santa Fe Baldy. This project will receive horse-packing support from the Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA)\, who will pack in all of our food and cooking equipment the 4 miles from trailhead to basecamp. Speaking of cooking\, all meals will be provided by an award-winning trail chef who really knows how to cook up a tasty meal in the backcountry! Water will be available in the area around basecamp. The trail work will be tread repair and some trail re-routing. All tools will be provided. \nWe will be camping in a wooded area at 11\,000’ elevation. Volunteers will need to provide their own backpack\, tent and sleeping bag suitable for high-altitude camping. Also bring a plate\, bowl\, cup and utensils. Plan to bring good work gloves\, long-sleeved shirts\, long pants and sturdy boots. Rain gear\, hat and sunscreen will also be needed. Bring a small daypack and water bottles\, plus any trail snacks desired. SUMMARY:Gilita Trail (Glenwood RD)
DESCRIPTION:We need your help over the Memorial Day weekend as we will be working on the Gilita trail in the northern part of the Gila Wilderness. This is a really beautiful section of the Gila and we’ll be doing tread work on the trail\, brushing and clearing downed logs along the trail corridor. We’ll work all day Friday through Sunday and half a day on Monday. \nWe’ll be camping at Snow Lake. VFO will be supplying breakfast Friday through Monday and dinners on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will be responsible for their own lunches\, which we’ll eat on the trail\, plus snacks and beverages\, adult or otherwise \nMost people will arrive on Thursday evening\, but if you have constraints\, arriving early on Friday is possible.
