SUMMARY:Bear\, Allie & Woodhaul Backpack (Gila NF) CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This project is cancelled due to severe weather. \n \nDescription: Come join us as we partner with the Gila Chapter of the NM Back Country Horsemen on a horse-supported backpack project near Silver City. See below for information from the Gila BCH website: \n“These trails are close to Silver City and Mimbres. Our overall goal is reopening the Allie/Bear Canyon/Woodhaul Loop\, which has interesting rock formations\, often flowing water and spots of mixed conifer. Our basecamp will be determined by road conditions and weather. We have 2 camp options\, one at a lower elevation and one at a higher elevation. The hike to basecamp could be up to 6.5 miles. We also have 3 options to access the project. These will be determined closer to the time of the project based on current road conditions. We will have our Seek Outside hot tent with us for the cool mornings and evenings. Days will likely be warm. We will meet between 8:00-8:30AM on Thursday\, March 30 (location TBD) for introductions\, work objectives\, safety talk and gear check. We will give the packers our food and a bit of our gear before hiking to basecamp. \nFood: Gila BCH homemade vacuum sealed meals (breakfasts and dinners) will be available for this project. We can accommodate meat eaters\, vegetarians\, and some gluten free diets. But you can also bring your own breakfasts and dinners if you prefer. Everyone will need to provide their own lunches and snacks. Water: Please bring water for the hike to basecamp. Water will be filtered from the creek at basecamp. Please bring 3-quart water capacity since we will not always have water where we are working. We will provide: Tools\, hard hats\, trail and safety training\, project supervision\, and first aid kit with Wilderness First Responder trained personnel.” \nPlease see the BCH website description for a packing list and more information! Sign up below by Tuesday\, March 21. \nDifficulty:   \nGroup Size: 10 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign up by clicking below:\nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. If you would like to sign up additional volunteers please submit multiple signups.

SUMMARY:Trail Workshop - Field (CABQ Open Space) CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The Field Workshop is cancelled due to severe weather. \nDescription: This session will build upon skills introduced at the March 11 class for new volunteers\, but anyone is welcome to sign up for either or both sessions. The field training will take place on CABQ Open Space land near Tijeras Creek\, along Route 66 east of Albuquerque. Experienced Open Space personnel and NMVFO members will help mentor volunteers as we re-route an existing trail. Expected tasks include building the new trail segment following a better path identified by pin flags and closing off the old section by covering it with branches and any nearby rocks\, transplanting available cactuses\, and scarifying the surface to slow erosion and encourage new growth. Building the new trail may include clearing or trimming existing plants\, reshaping the trail’s surface to improve drainage\, and reinforcing it with rocks as needed. \nVolunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes (no sandals)\, long pants\, and bring work gloves\, hat\, and other apparel appropriate for the predicted weather. Also bring a day pack with snacks\, lunch\, sunblock and plenty of water. Registered volunteers will be provided updates by email. \nDirections:  We will meet by 8:30 AM in the parking lot of the Tijeras BioZone Education Center at 15600 Old Route 66. As shown on this map\, if coming from Albuquerque on I-40\, turn south at the Tramway Blvd exit\, then turn left on Central Ave. and continue driving west for 1.2 miles. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 20 \nCost: Free! \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nSign up by clicking below. If the project is full\, you can email the project leader to be put on a wait list. \nOn the signup form please leave the “Number of Volunteers” at 1. If you would like to sign up additional volunteers please submit multiple signups.

SUMMARY:CANCELED BY USFS - Valle Vidal Wetland Restoration (Carson NF)
DESCRIPTION:Description: Come join us as we partner with Albuquerque Wildlife Federation to help restore wetlands in Ring Place Meadow in the beautiful Valle Vidal\, on the Questa Ranger District not far from the Colorado border. From the USFS website: “The Valle Vidal (The Valley of Life) unit of the Carson National Forest was donated to the People of the United States by the Pennzoil Company in 1982. This lush mountain basin\, located in the heart of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains\, is home to a magnificent elk herd and other abundant wildlife. The vistas of high peaks\, forests\, and alpine meadows are breathtaking. With elevations of 7\,700-12\,584 feet\, the plant life is abundant and varied.” \nWe’ll camp (dispersed camping) in the meadow on Friday and Saturday nights; volunteers are welcome to arrive on Saturday morning if preferred. Meals will be done a little differently from usual: breakfast will be provided on Saturday morning (veggie burritos)\, and dinner “mains” (meat and veggie options) on Saturday evening. Volunteers are asked to bring a potluck side dish for Saturday dinner\, as well as their own lunches\, snacks and Sunday breakfast\, plus Friday dinner if applicable. Please bring water for camping\, and your own dishes\, cup and silverware. \nWe’ll be building rock structures in streams\, so come prepared to get wet! A change of shoes for camp is highly recommended. Required while working: long pants\, sturdy boots\, eye protection (sunglasses)\, work gloves. Please also bring a daypack\, hat\, rainwear\, sunblock\, snacks and lunch\, and plenty of water during the day. \nYou can sign up below until Sunday\, July 17. One person per signup. Hope to see you there! \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 15 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign Up

SUMMARY:CANCELED DUE TO FOREST CLOSURE - Ellis Trail (Sandia RD)
DESCRIPTION:Description: Come join us on the Ellis Trail\, not far from the Sandia Crest in the Sandia Mountains. The Sandia Ranger District (SRD) has identified several sections of trail which are eroded and in need of realignment for better sustainability. Volunteers will build new tread and close off the old trail\, and there will likely be some rock work (cribbing) involved for those who want. NMVFO will provide hard hats (required on USFS projects) and tools. Also required: work gloves\, boots\, long pants\, long sleeves\, eye protection (sunglasses). Please bring a day pack for food\, water\, sunblock and rain gear. \nThis is a car-camping project\, a rare opportunity to spend a night on the mountain. The SRD is currently contemplating where we’ll camp (stay tuned). It will probably be close to the Ellis Trailhead\, though on the north side of the road. NMVFO will supply water; it will be helpful if volunteers can also bring some containers. Along with camping gear (tent\, sleeping bag & pad\, headlamp\, camp chair\, etc)\, volunteers are also asked to bring their own plate\, bowl\, mug and silverware. Feel free to bring a cooler and beverages – adult or other. NMVFO will provide breakfast and dinner on Saturday\, and breakfast on Sunday; volunteers will supply their own lunches and snacks. \nVolunteers are welcome to camp Friday night (no meals provided)\, join us early for breakfast on Saturday\, or join us at our 8:00 AM meeting time. We’ll plan to work until ~4:00 on Saturday\, and we’ll finish before 2:00 on Sunday. \nAs a reminder\, pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects. \nPlease sign up below by Sunday\, June 5. One person per signup. Hope you can join us! \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: Max 20 \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project. \nSign Up

SUMMARY:Middle Fork Backpack (Gila NF) - CANCELED DUE TO FIRE DANGER
DESCRIPTION:Description: New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors\, Back Country Horsemen (BCH)\, and Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) will collaborate on a 6-day project on the middle fork of the Gila River with a half day during the project to explore or relax. Volunteers will be able to address 5.5 miles of corridor\, cairns and tread work as this popular Gila Alternate route winds along the banks of the Gila with towering cliff faces overhead. This is a popular route for locals\,  thru-hikers and equestrians to experience the beauty of the Gila Wilderness. Post-fire flooding and extensive deferred maintenance have caused the trail to braid along the riverside\, causing travelers to bushwhack through sensitive river landscapes. \nBe prepared to get your feet wet daily\, since the trail crosses the river frequently in this tight canyon. Tools will be provided and will be packed in by horses. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided by BCH. Volunteers are asked to bring their own snacks and lunches. \nCurrent CDTC Covid protocols will be observed on this partnered project. \nVolunteers will arrive the morning of May 26th or can camp at the trailhead the night before\, meeting between 8:15-8:30 AM for a gear check and some paperwork before the 8 mile hike to base camp. \nClick here for a detailed project description and gear list. \nDifficulty: \nGroup Size: 15 \nSign up below by Wednesday\, May 18. One person per signup. \nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at Volunteer FAQ\, or email the project leader. \nPlease read our Volunteer Guidelines before signing up for this project.

SUMMARY:Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge Tree Planting 2 (FWS) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:The Sevilleta NWR protects a large area north of Socorro featuring a variety of terrain\, flora\, and fauna on both sides of the Rio Grande. Photos of last year’s project can be viewed on our Flickr site.\nDescription: We will be helping to improve the riparian habitat along the Rio Grande\, in an area that has been cleared of invasive Tamarisk trees\, by pole-planting willows and/or cottonwoods. This will restore an environment favorable to a variety of native wildlife\, especially the endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher. Refuge staff will have already drilled holes down to the water table with a large auger and prepared cuttings for planting\, so our main job will be inserting these small saplings and back-filling the holes. As this task needs to be done in late winter (before the growing season)\, please dress for chilly weather and any precipitation depending on the latest forecast for Socorro. The work area may be muddy\, so wearing sturdy boots or work shoes is advised. Also bring work gloves and a day pack with lunch\, drinks\, and snacks. Extra water will be available at the work site. Our work may be completed by early or mid-afternoon depending on attendance.\nPandemic Protocols: The project will be limited to 15 volunteers\, divided into separate teams of 5 or fewer. Masks are mandatory\, and the extensive areas to be planted will allow volunteers to work individually while maintaining social distancing. Except for people from the same household\, carpooling will not be possible. If you wake up with any symptoms of Covid-19 or do not feel well for any reason\, please don’t hesitate to stay home. For more information\, go to https://nmvfo.org/covid-19-protocols/\nDirections: We will meet at the Sevilleta Visitor Center parking lot by 8:30 AM to sign in and take advantage of the indoor plumbing if desired. The center is located 60 miles south of Albuquerque’s “Big-I” on Interstate 25. (Google map) Take Exit 169 and make a sharp right turn at the first intersection. As shown by the map\, the Visitor Center is about 1/4 of a mile up this road. From there we will drive in a caravan several miles to the work site on gravel roads that are normally suitable for sedans.\nDifficulty: 1 Pulaski\nGroup Size: No more than 15.\nFor more information: If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq\, or email the project leader.\n\n\n\nSign up using the button below no later than Thursday\, February 18.\nSign Up

For more information\, go to https://nmvfo.org/covid-19-protocols/.\nDirections: We will meet at the Sevilleta Visitor Center parking lot by 8:30 AM to sign in and take advantage of the indoor plumbing if desired. The center is located 60 miles south of Albuquerque’s “Big-I” on Interstate 25. (Google map) Take Exit 169 and make a sharp right turn at the first intersection. As shown by the map\, the Visitor Center is about 1/4 of a mile up this road. From there we will drive in a caravan several miles to the work site on gravel roads that are normally suitable for sedans.\nDifficulty: 1 Pulaski\nGroup Size: No more than 15\n\n\n\nSign up using the button below no later than Thursday\, February 11.\nSign Up

SUMMARY:Hillsboro Bypass Trail Backpack (Gila NF) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Description: NMVFO is partnering with Heart of the Gila to work along the Hillsboro Bypass Trail 412 and the Black Range Crest Trail 79 in the Black Range of the Gila National Forest\, mostly tread work and brushing. We will meet at the Emory Pass trailhead (8200’) and backpack in to set up basecamp on top of Hillsboro Peak (10\,000’). There we will have use of a cabin\, a cistern for water\, and an outhouse. Volunteers will have the option of sleeping in the cabin or setting up tents nearby. There is a lookout tower near the cabin\, which provides stunning views. There is mixed conifer forest on the peak\, despite the 2013 Silver Fire which destroyed most of the conifers in the high country nearby.\nTools\, group food and kitchen items will be packed in by livestock. Volunteers will carry their own camping gear and personal items\, including tent (if bringing)\, sleeping bag and sleeping pad. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided; volunteers are to supply their own lunches and snacks. Please wear sturdy boots\, and bring work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses)\, a hat\, rain gear\, and warm layers for mornings and evenings.\nPlease sign up below. SUMMARY:Cole Spring (Sandia RD) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Description: Please sign up below. Join us for a day and a half of work near the intersection of the Faulty and Cañoncito trails in the Sandia Mountains. Volunteers will build a spur trail\, redefine existing tread\, create water protection measures\, and build a buck & rail fence to direct traffic and mitigate erosion in the vicinity of Cañoncito Spring. We will camp nearby at the Cole Spring picnic area. Read on for details…\nOn Friday evening we will meet at the Sandia Ranger District (SRD) Visitor Center\, at the north end of the parking lot. From there we’ll caravan to our campsite at Cole Spring. The road to Cole Spring is rough\, and 4WD is best. The Forest Service would prefer that we use as few vehicles as possible\, so carpooling is encouraged. There is a secure (fenced) area at the SRD to leave cars behind. We pass through a locked gate to get to Cole Spring and will not leave the area until the end of the project\, except in case of emergency.\nCamping at Cole Spring should be pleasant\, with picnic tables and shade. Nights could be cold\, so pack accordingly! Besides tent\, sleeping bag/pad\, headlamp\, etc\, a camp chair and cooler are nice to have. Please bring your own dinnerware and eating utensils. NMVFO will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday\, and dinner on Saturday. Volunteers will be responsible for their own lunches and snacks\, as well as dinner on Friday.\nUSFS regulations require that we wear sturdy boots\, long pants and sleeves\, work gloves\, eye protection (sunglasses okay) and hard hats when we work. Hard hats and tools provided. Please also bring a day pack\, water bottle\, sunglasses\, sunblock\, and rain gear.\nNote: Depending on the timeline for clarification and resolution of the court-ordered injunction on select activities on the Cibola (related to potential effects on the Mexican spotted owl)\, there is a chance this project will be moved to the Ellis Trail. If so\, we would work on reroutes of badly eroded sections on that trail\, car-camping nearby. If the location/scope is changed\, we will contact anyone who has already signed up to make sure they still want to join the project.\nPlease register below. Sign-ups for this project close on Saturday\, May 9th.\nDifficulty: 2 Pulaskis\nGroup Size: TBD\nFor more information:  If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq\, or email the project leader.\n\nSign Up

Please click on the CDTC Volunteer Page link below to fill out the form and be added to the waitlist.\nDescription: NMVFO will partner with the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) and Heart of the Gila on a backcountry trail maintenance project on the middle fork of the Gila River. We will re-establish tread\, build cairns and clear corridor along this highly used alternate route of the Continental Divide Trail. The project will take place in a backcountry setting where crew leaders will set up a latrine and filter water daily from the Gila River. The hike to basecamp is approximately 10 miles; each day we will work north or south along the trail from there. The first and last days will be hiking days bookending the trail work\, which will include a half day of rest in the middle of the project.\nThe Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico\, Gila Chapter\, will provide horse support. All tools\, PPE and meals will be provided. It is recommended to bring extra snacks. You will need to provide your own pack\, tent and sleeping bag/pad. Prior to the start date\, CDTC will send out a packing checklist and other information to those who have registered. Sign up on the CDTC Volunteer page\, where you will also find more details about the project. Be aware that this project filled up quickly last year! SUMMARY:Guadalupe Pueblo Ruins (BLM Rio Puerco) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Description: Please consider joining us on Saturday\, April 11th for a one day project at Guadalupe Ruin. The work site is approximately a 2-hour drive from Albuquerque\, and we need to be at the site no later than 9 am. More information about the area can be found at this link. Guadalupe Ruin\, the easternmost Chacoan Outlier\, is a single-story masonry pueblo situated on an isolated sandstone mesa rising nearly 200 feet above the valley floor. The top of the mesa is isolated by sheer walls on all sides\, with access to the top restricted to a narrow trail. We’ll be building block stairs and doing some trail reconstruction. The existing trail is approximately 1/8-1/4 mile long from the parking area to the ruins.\nThere is the possibility of arriving on Friday evening to camp the day before the project. However\, it will be PRIMITIVE camping on Mesa Chivato.\nSign up below. Project leader Mike Myers will contact volunteers with essential information about preparing for and planning transportation. We will meet at the Home Depot in Rio Rancho to carpool in high clearance vehicles. SUMMARY:Perea Nature Area (BLM Rio Puerco) - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Description: The Perea Nature Trail makes a one-mile loop through a riparian area adjacent to the normally dry Rio Salado\, with views of the southernmost cliffs of the Jemez Mountain Range. Located on level terrain and constructed with a gravel surface\, the trail crosses the old riverbed on wooden bridges and takes visitors past bird-viewing stops and benches. For an informative brochure\, go to: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/Brochure%20Perea%20Nature%20Trail_2020_508.pdf\nVolunteers will be improving the condition of parts of the trail by shoring up eroding segments of the tread with concrete pavers and perhaps landscaping timbers\, trimming back overgrown vegetation\, and removing bunch grasses and noxious weeds from the tread and alongside the trail. We may also renovate a bird-viewing shelter. Phyllis Martinez (co-leader)\, a recently retired USFS trail working expert\, will be supervising the work. Volunteers are advised to wear sturdy boots or shoes\, work gloves\, and dress in layers based on the latest weather forecast. Also bring a day pack with a couple liters of water\, snacks\, food for lunch\, and personal items. Depending on attendance\, we may finish work by mid-afternoon\, but volunteers may leave earlier if need be. To register for this project\, click on the sign-up button at the bottom of the page by March 26. If you are bringing another family member or guest\, please fill out a separate form for them.\nThe trail’s parking lot is located on US 550 about 23 miles from its intersection with I-25 in Bernalillo. Turn left into the parking lot just after crossing a bridge over the Rio Salado and before reaching the village of San Ysidro. As shown on the map\, there is a Speedway gas station/convenience store less than a half mile farther west on 550 that has snacks\, coffee\, other drinks\, and indoor facilities (which volunteers may drive to during the work day if necessary).\nDifficulty: 1 Pulaski\nGroup Size: Up to 25\nVenue Information: Rio Puerco Field Office (BLM)\, https://www.blm.gov/office/rio-puerco-field-office\, 505-761-8798\nFor more information:  If this is your first NMVFO project\, you can find more information about difficulty ratings and what to expect at http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq\, or email Larry at L.Benson@nmvfo.org\n\nSign Up

SUMMARY:North St. Peter's Dome (Jemez Ranger District)
DESCRIPTION:May 11 @ 9:00 AM –May 12 @ 1:00 PM \nDifficulty: 2 Pulaskis \nContact Leader: Lawrence (Larry) Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com \, 505-821-7999\, to sign up. \nDescription: After having to cancel a project on the other end of the St Peters Dome Trail (#118) in March because of flooding along Forest Road 289\, we will be working in from its northern trailhead. For some photos of our last project there in 2013\, go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157633694712112/with/8832524304/ The trail continues to suffer erosion and deadfall as a result of the Las Conchas Fire of 2011. This project will be supervised by Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District\, one of the U.S. Forest Service’s acknowledged trail experts. Our work will include restoring the trail’s tread by clearing grass and other vegetation from the trail corridor\, removing rocks and building cairns and check dams where needed\, removing any tree trunks blocking the trail\, and improving drainage by cleaning sediment from old water bars\, making rolling dips where appropriate\, and out-sloping the tread along hillsides. Although there will be little or no shade\, the scenic views will be unobstructed. If lucky we may even see some of the Bighorn Sheep recently reintroduced in nearby Cochiti Canyon. USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, boots (no soft shoes or sandals)\, and work gloves. Please also bring a day pack with plenty of water\, some of your favorite snacks\, a rain jacket or poncho if rain is in the forecast\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses. For additional guidance\, see http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq/ \nIf there are more than 20 volunteers\, others may be placed on a waiting list. Camping will be available on Friday and Saturday nights in a grassy meadow known as “Graduation Flats\,” where there is lots of space for tents and a parking lot for vehicles and RVs. The Jemez Ranger District will provide a porta-potty\, water\, and possibly some wood for a campfire. The VFO will provide dinner on Saturday evening and breakfasts\, Saturday and Sunday morning\, and sandwich fixings and fruit for lunch. Volunteers camping overnight should sign up with Larry by 9 PM on May 8\, while those just coming on Saturday should notify him by noon on May 10. \nDirections: Take NM 4 to its junction with Forest Road 289 (between mile markers 43 and 44) and follow the green VFO signs 2.3 miles south to the parking lot (just past its junction with FR 287 and before the junction with FR 36. See https://www.google.com/maps/@35.8235444\,-106.4470005\,863m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en The drive from Albuquerque’s northern boundary on I-25\, US 550\, and NM 4 is 77 miles and takes about 2 hours. (Caution: NM 4 has limited passing zones and strictly enforced speed limits in San Ysidro\, the Jemez Pueblo\, and Jemez Springs.) \nThe drive from Santa Fe’s city limit via NM 4 through White Rock is 53 miles and takes about 1 1/4 hours. It will be appreciated if anyone having a high-clearance vehicle would help in carpooling the 7 miles to the trailhead if necessary. For those not camping on Friday night\, please plan to arrive by 8:45 AM on Saturday. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDetails \nStart: May 11 @ 9:00 AM \nEnd: May 12 @ 1:00 PM \nOrganizer \nName: Lawrence Benson \nPhone: 505-821-7999 Email: LawRBenson@aol.com \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/@35.8235444\,-106.4470005\,863m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

SUMMARY:South St. Peter's Dome (Jemez RD)--CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:This project has been cancelled due to impassable roads. \nDifficulty: 3 Pulaskis \nContact: Project Leader Larry Benson\, LawRBenson@aol.com (505-821-7999) to sign up. \nThe NMVFO has helped maintain and repair this remote and rugged trail for many years\, especially after the infamous Las Conchas wildfire of 2011. Photos of last year’s work are available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/78338108@N07/albums/72157668721116028.    This year we will hike in 2.5 miles through cliff-lined Sanchez Canyon and up past last year’s work to begin restoring the central portion of the trail—hopefully as far as Picacho Peak.  The scenic vistas are unobstructed\, and if we’re lucky we may see one of the Bighorn Sheep recently reintroduced in adjacent Cochiti Canyon.  Shade will be scarce\, and hiking up trail segments with steep grades and switchbacks will be fairly strenuous.  Once reaching the unrepaired portion of the trail\, we will clear vegetation and any deadfall blocking the trail corridor\, shore up washed out sections with rocks\, and improve the trail by removing bunch grass\, out-sloping the tread along hillsides\, cleaning sediment from old water bars\, building cairns\, and excavating other drainage features as needed.  USFS regulations require long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, sturdy boots\, and work gloves.  In addition to carrying a tool\, you will need to pack in your own lunch and plenty of water. So bring a day pack\, hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and—if precipitation is in the forecast—a rain jacket or poncho.  For additional guidance\, consult http://nmvfo.org/volunteer/volunteer-faq. Extra bottled water and other drinks will be available from a cooler at the trailhead. \nOur meeting place will be at the Pueblo de Cochiti Convenience Store\, 1405 Cochiti Highway (NM 22). See  https://www.google.com/maps/@35.6473593\,-106.3291461\,16.25z?hl=en or geo-location 35°38’54.4″N\, 106°19’53.6″W.  This is a relatively short commute from either Albuquerque or Santa Fe.  Take I-25 to Exit 264 at the bottom of La Bajada Hill\, then west on NM 16 and north on NM 22 under the massive Cochiti Lake Dam and uphill to the Convenience Store/Gasoline Station on the right.  Park in the gravel lot to the left of the store\, which has coffee\, pastries and other snacks\, as well as restrooms. Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 AM\, when we will carpool in high-clearance vehicles to the trailhead\, which is a few miles up Forest Road 289. (The gate to FR 289 is on the right side of NM 22 about 3/4 mile past the Cochiti Golf Course.)  For anyone who would like to stay nearby overnight\, the Corps of Engineers operates two campgrounds at Cochiti Lake (minimum fee: $5.00). \n

SUMMARY:Skyline Backpack (Santa Fe NF)
DESCRIPTION:**This project will only run if the Santa Fe National Forest reopens by June 20th (Stage III fire restrictions)**  Join us as we repair a very scenic trail high up in the Pecos Wilderness! We will make our basecamp at the meadows of Puerto Nambe and work to repair the Skyline Trail as it climbs from the meadows to a saddle on the side of Santa Fe Baldy. This project will receive horse-packing support from the Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA)\, who will pack in all of our food and cooking equipment the 4 miles from trailhead to basecamp. Speaking of cooking\, all meals will be provided by an award-winning trail chef who really knows how to cook up a tasty meal in the backcountry! Water will be available in the area around basecamp. The trail work will be tread repair and some trail re-routing. All tools will be provided. \nWe will be camping in a wooded area at 11\,000’ elevation. Volunteers will need to provide their own backpack\, tent and sleeping bag suitable for high-altitude camping. Also bring a plate\, bowl\, cup and utensils. Plan to bring good work gloves\, long-sleeved shirts\, long pants and sturdy boots. Rain gear\, hat and sunscreen will also be needed. Bring a small daypack and water bottles\, plus any trail snacks desired.
